Catholic League to the rescue: Larry David pee's on Jesus
Classic

On Sunday's 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' Larry David was taking a "new pill" that caused him to urinate with excessive force. This caused a lot of splash back, some of which ended up on a Jesus painting hanging on the bathroom wall of his pious assistant, who later sees Jesus "crying" and assumes a miracle has taken place.

Catholics are not amused. Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, said in a statement:

Mention Larry David in a word association game and "Seinfeld" rolls off the lips. That show, which David created, wrote and produced, was brilliant. "Curb Your Enthusiasm" is not. Indeed, last night's episode demonstrates that David's best years are behind him. He ought to quit while he's ahead.

At one point in the show, David goes to the bathroom in a Catholic home and splatters urine on a picture of Jesus; he doesn't clean it off. Then a Catholic woman goes to the bathroom, sees the picture and concludes that Jesus is crying. She then summons her equally stupid mother and the two of them fall to their knees in prayer. When David and Jerry Seinfeld (playing himself) are asked if they ever experienced a miracle, David answers, "every erection is a miracle." That's what passes for creativity these days.

Was Larry David always this crude? Would he think it comedic if someone urinated on a picture of his mother? This might be fun to watch, but since HBO only likes to dump on Catholics (it was just a couple of weeks ago that Sarah Silverman insulted Catholics on "Real Time with Bill Maher"), and David is Jewish, we'll never know.

1. Is Donohoe equally outraged by E-bay "Jesus Cheeto" auctions?
...because that's the kind of nuttery this humor is aimed at.

2. It's funny that Bill Donohue's attacks always follow a protocol
Usually with right wingers, they're crazy, but you can always expect the same kind of smears with Donohue.

How a Bill Donohue attack always goes:
1. What the "offender" did
2. The offender is washed up and should retire
3. The offender is stupid, dumb, a sell-out, etc.
4. And remember, we're the victims here

Donohue's attacks are like clockwork, he can't even be original in calling someone stupid.

And Bill Donohue is a fucking moron.

5. What's the difference between Jesus and a picture of Jesus?
It only takes one nail to hang a picture of Jesus.

8. That was hilarious
The scene was making fun of people who see Jesus in tortillas and such.

Even the Church itself distances itself from these people.

I imagine that even a priest or two would get a secret laugh out of that.

13. You're right. He's a bully! He's a right-wing zealot, not a typical Roman Catholic.

16. As far as I know Bill Donohue is the only member of the Catholic League
Unless you're talking about the one where they play high school basketball.

17. One of the funniest episodes ever was when he spotted...
Edited on Wed Oct-28-09 10:22 PM by hlthe2b
the baptism of the jewish fiance' of his wife Cheryl's (Catholic) niece in the lake, which they spot as they were driving up to the wedding. He mistakes that they are assaulting him and jumps in to save him--only afterwords finding out how ridiculous his mistake, but by that time all the other jewish guests are lauding him with praise for stopping the "conversion."

That said, this doesn't strike me as funny.... Comedy sometimes crosses the line, though...

20. Why does the Catholic family's home have a picture of Jesus in the shitter?
Pretty much my whole family's Catholic, and even the one really, really religious aunt who has crucifixes in every other room of her house and various religious art all over doesn't have a picture of Jesus in the same room as her toilet.

22. Eh, we pee on the messengers we chose to I guess, if he'd a peed on a matzo ball...
someone else would have been pissed. That Bill Donohue dude needs to lighten up, he's way to busy with this stuff. He knows better; with a history of nefarious doings stretching 100's of years it's not like Catholicism is blameless here, and his end-to-end protestations too much about all this inappropriatness befalling the church leaves me with an impression he has no interest in discussing anything not even why some relics are just bones - Take A Chill Pill Bill, haven't you heard?

It's morning in America
