Poll question: Your View of the "Far Left" (by American standards) |
|
We've heard it used here and elsewhere, and we kind of know what it means - even though we won't all agree on the exact meaning.
You may agree with more than one of these statements, so pick the one you relate to the most...

"far" from what? usually far from the beliefs of the person using the term. We can't even define the center - how are you supposed to know how far left of it something is?

5. Is there a "Far Left" in the USA? |
|
I think far left is a term Bill O'Reilly likes to use to describe anyone who votes Democratic but I don't see any organized far left here. In France, unions can shut the county down and bring commerce to a halt, now that's a strong "far left".

6. LOL. There is no "far left" in America. |
|
I am a moderate liberal (by global, Western standards) yet many of my peers here in the Deep South consider me to be a radical socialist.

8. that's an impossible question. |
|
I'm an outright socialist, trade unionist, and believe that America would be well-served by the summary street execution of a few hundred wealthy in order to instill a healthy fear of the working class into the rest of them. That's pretty far left to me.
That said, much of the American "far left" is obsessed with conspiracy theories, identity politics, antisemitism, rejection of science, and the whole-hearted embrace of New Age lunacy and alternative health quackery. Some express admiration for Kim Jong Il, Saddam Hussein, and Vladimir Putin. Fuck that. I can't identify with the Left as a whole, just my section of it.

10. As a member of the "Far Left", these are my beliefs: |
|
1.The reorganization of economic life on the basis of social need and the common good.
2.The elimination of poverty and oppression.
3.The elevation of the living standards of the nation’s people on the basis of social equality.
4.Create the fullest extension of democratic control over the policies and priorities of society and the processes by which wealth is produced and distributed.

"Freedom is the absolute right of all adult men and women to seek permission for their actions only from their own conscience and reason, and to be determined in their actions only by their own will, and consequently to be responsible only to themselves, and then to the society to which they belong, but only insofar as they have made a free decision to belong to it." 13. Around here, the "far left" is anyone who disagrees with Obama about anything. |
|
The term is used more as a matter of one's attitude than one's actual political ideology.

16. I think Joe Lieberman proved that if you move too far to the "center" you meet the far-right |

And of course the Blue Dogs and the DLC look an awful lot like the far-right quite often as well.
As often as people claim that the left is just like the right however that does not seem to be the case at all.
