What damn purpose does it serve to air the voice of the killer's violence? |
|
$$$$$
The airing of the killer's audio/video manifesto is damn near criminal behavior. It's another crime against the victims that his voice made it to the primetime air before their innocent own.

5. It give the viewer a sense of what this young man was like. |
|
How much hate he had, andat least part of why he did this killing. If you are going to try to tell me you weren't wondering about all of those things, I simply can't believe you.
I know I was. I wanted to know why he was so very angry, and why he chose those specific killing sites and people.
Some of those questions were answered with that video, but not all of them. I still don't know why he chose the sites he did.

If you say he is angry and then try to figure out what made him angry you are looking up the wrong tree.

than waste a second caring about "his" anger. Your empathy is an insult if you seek to understand and pity that murderous ghoul. The mentally ill are not given a free pass to be held at a different standard than anyone else. As gross as this guy was, I believe he was competent....He knew what he was doing, strategically planned his assault and knew exactly what the outcome would be....This was a premeditated choice.

14. Obviously, the guy had a lot of hate in him..... |
|
......he was angry, disturbed - good grief, he killed 32 people besides himself. I don't need to see videos and photos paraded up and down on TV, ad nauseum I might add, to know that. I don't care how old I get, I will never understand how a person can do such a thing, no matter what explanations they try to give. This slideshow is morbid, ghoulish and disgusting - sensationalism at its worst, and the Anchors just litterally drooling and frothing at the mouth. Sick!

20. I find it hard to believe that you have no curiosity? |
|
I am curious enough to want to see him while alive, and try to understand what was makig him so very angry. You may seethat as foolish of me, but I believe killings like this and others are a result of something in our culture. Something is making some people look to a gun FIRST to solve their anger and emotional problems. I'm really trying to find out why that is?

And, I'd like to point out that I think the media is actually being very responsible with this. They can and SHOULD air it - not to give the killer a voice, but to give a voice to the mental illness within him so that others can know what to look for in friends and family with similar leanings.
I believe, in time, most of the victims' families will want to know, too, what caused this man to commit these horrific acts of violence on their loved ones. Look at the 9/11 families and how much they have done to pursue the actions leading up to the event.

At the very least it gives us some insight into what a moron the guy was. A lot of people were saying he didn't 'look like a troubled individual' from his photos. I think anyone who knew him would at the very least be wary.

Want to know why our news is so much like tabloid "journalism?" Because people buy it.
The National Enquirer outsells Time and Newsweek weekly. Why? Because people want to read this shit.
We need to look at ourselves and not the media.
There is, of course, something to be said about getting the bean counters out of the news business and actually taking losses on the news shows (as used to be the case), but... (rhetorically) let me know what the stockholders have to say about that and get back to me.

I just watched the video and it seems obvious to me, that he had major mental health issue's. He didn't use any inflection in his voice. It was all in a monotone. I'm guessing the victims will want to see it, just out of curiosity. Maybe it will help them make peace with it all!

Why cross the line here and throw caution to the wind? If one victim is traumatized by the airing of this man's taunting and casting of blame it would be one too many.

It's the sound of fear they want ringing in everyone's ears - for as long as they can keep us distracted, off-balance and shut-down with anxiety. The answer to this is to stay steady and remain calm. We've learned over the last six years how the masses get played by the fear-mongering of the media. My instinct is to not even allow myself to be outraged by how the media is using this, but doing whatever I can think of to help people around me keep their balance and perspective with all this. Let's not fall for this shit again, people.
We're all in this together. I say, "No fear this time."

It's one thing to air the hopes and aspirations of the victims, it's another to give killers a public platform for their hatred. I can imagine others who will be looking to elevate the voice of their own violence after seeing the airplay this killer's words have gotten.

It's offensive and obscene. The purpose is sensationlism, media orgasm, and of course, their manipulation of our reality. If the guy had only killed 15 people and it wasn't the "worst gun massacre in US history" would it be less news? Having it be the WORST is what's important. The killer is dead. There is no more story. There are no killers to find. There is nothing to investigate. Unlike a war or two-that is actually happening NOW that we can stop or a 9/11 that we stop from happening again or a scandal bankrupting millions of Americans lives.
I find this reality so unreal, and especially since I just came back to the country from out of town. How many people have died of say, breast cancer since monday? America doesn't understand death and thus life at all. Therefore we must obsess about something even if it isn't our own grief. Do we have no authentic grief of our own? Must we be constantly manipulated into sorrow and horror and outrage about something we can never do anything about? That's the difference between this and a story with political or local relevance. That we can act upon. This is only porn without purpose.

28. time and place for everything--this is neither! |
|
Of course these videos should be made public, but they should be more the focus of people doing research in libraries than across the evening news on prime time. People can analyze it, write research about it, write best selling books about it...fine. Of course many of us would like to learn more to try to figure out why this kook was a kook. Etc.
But putting it on the evening news and spending most of our time focusing on the killer seems to be putting the emphasis on entirely the wrong place. The media should be focussing on the crime, not the criminal. The victims, not the perp.
This was a horrible thing and I am afraid placing too much attention on the killer might be presenting the wrong message.

Had a very serious mental illness and was not getting the proper treatment. I hope that MSNBC and other news networks will actually spend some time and talk about this issue. I know they want to sensationalize it for ratings but I hope they have some shred of decency and actually discuss mental health so teachers, parents and students can learn from this.
