Hey Michigan folks, is Stupak in for life or is it possible to credibly primary the fucker? |

1. I'll be donating to any warm body they find to oppose him |

in the primary. Even another antichoice fool would be preferable because s/he would be a freshman and relatively powerless.
That fat fuck has got to go.

2. Just why does the anti-choice crowd carry so much weight? |

It's the law of the land and they act like they get some special right to change legislation to eliminate a right. I wish other groups could do the same. Think how the environment would change if the greens could do the same.

I grew up in that district. It's the UP and a little bit of the northern end of the lower peninsula.
As I recall, the seat has a long history of being held by one person for a long time. Phil Ruppe held it for a long time while I was a kid- then Bob Davis for 6 or 7 terms, and Stupak since then (1992 first election, I think). It's hard to unseat someone with that kind of seniority. Plus, the UP is a pretty conservative place, despite many years of D representation in congress. I don't know what his popularity is at home, but it wouldn't surprise me if he holds the seat for a while longer. (Unless he sets his sights on a higher slot)

5. His district is in northern Michigan. Not exactly 'liberal' territory. |
|
I suspect he ran on the dem ticket for an easy win.

6. I'm sure he's not a lifer .... |
|
... but, his district covers the entirety of MI's U.P. ... folk are different there .... not good/bad (just different). My feelings are that anyone running as a traditional liberal or traditional conservative up there won't last.

7. Partisan index is, IIRC +3 R.... |
|
...and Michigan has a (virtually) open primary.
I would expect a small-scale version of Lamont/Lieberman.

9. So you want to primary-out a long-time Democrat who votes with his party 96.1% of the time? |
|
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/s001045/And yet when the words "single issue" are raised to some, they recoil in shocked--shocked!--indignation.

11. Are his "C Street" connections a boon or a liability up there? |

His constituents know he's a member of The Family, right?

12. I was told here that he is much loved there. |
|
That he was standing up for his district's views.
In my mind the party leadership allowed him to impose his views on all women.

14. Stupak used to represent just the Upper Peninsula of MI. |
|
Edited on Sun Nov-08-09 03:49 PM by roamer65
...but with MI losing seats after each census, he has come to represent increasing amounts of the northern lower peninsula. That area tends to be annoyingly Rethuglican. He's trying to placate that part of his district, unfortunately.
