Kucinich's Brave Health Vote Vs. Obama's Failed Promise
Kucinich's Brave Health Vote Vs. Obama's Failed Promise

by Lee Stranahan

There were plenty of cowardly votes in the House last night but there was only one truly brave one. The unsung hero of the night was Ohio Representative Dennis Kucinich. Despite enormous pressure to support H.R. 3962, Rep. Kucinich did the right thing and voted 'no'. Unlike the Blue Dog votes against the bill, he did it for all the right reasons.

In a principled and practical statement, Rep. Kucinich said what a growing number of progressives have realized as we've watched real health care reform be compromised again and again.

During the debate, when the interests of insurance companies would have been effectively challenged, that challenge was turned back. The "robust public option" which would have offered a modicum of competition to a monopolistic industry was whittled down from an initial potential enrollment of 129 million Americans to 6 million. An amendment which would have protected the rights of states to pursue single-payer health care was stripped from the bill at the request of the Administration. Looking ahead, we cringe at the prospect of even greater favors for insurance companies.

Personally, I supported President Obama in the primaries and the election but do not support him on this corporate giveaway built on broken campaign promises. I voted for the Barack Obama who opposed the individual mandate, who said the negotiations would be televised on C-SPAN and who campaigned against backroom deals with PhARMA.

...what we got was the best we could get with the congress we have.

I join Alan Grayson in celebrating this beginning of meaningful reform.

It's far from perfect, but it IS the best we could get.

That is the case. When somebody stands up and tells the truth, like Kucinich, he must be ridiculed and marginalized. Why? Because the one thing this system cannot tolerate is too much truth. That would be telling. Great post!

27. That's what the gatekeepers have been saying since 1970.
What we got were Nixon's HMOs - wildly successful, right? Well, no. Not unless you were an insurance executive.

Then we got Clinton's Managed Care - another wild success? Well, no. Not unless you were an insurance executive.

Well here we are, back at the drawing board with mandates. A tax disguised as health insurance reform (a scheme not unsimilar to privatizing Social Security).

At every juncture we've been lectured that it was the best we could get and meaningful reform would follow. Which, of course, never happened.

And, if history is a guide, the rank & file Democrats will capitulate to conventional wisdom, keep their eyes off the prize and be lulled into the satisfaction of false victory and we will be waging this fight yet again in 20-25 years. Unfortunately, by then, the insurance industries will be more powerful. Flush with a regular stream of taxpayer money to buy off Congress.

70. The Congress we have?
But we were told when we that when we had the White House and majorities in both houses things would be different. We all worked our butts off and we achieved those goals - now we're being told it wasn't enough.

And on on November 3, 2010 they'll all be scratching their heads and wondering why no one bothered to go out and vote.

20. She didn’t think that it did enough to control health-care costs
http://www.coloradoan.com/article/20091108/NEWS01/91107020/1002

Betsy Markey votes against health-care bill

Rep. Betsy Markey voted against a health-care reform bill backed by President Barack Obama and the House Democratic leadership Saturday night, citing concerns over the cost of the bill.

“It was a difficult decision because there’s a lot of good things in the bill, as well, that I like, but in the end, I just didn’t think that it did enough to control health-care costs,” the Fort Collins Democrat said in an interview with the Coloradoan, calling it the most difficult vote she’s cast in her 10 months in Congress.

The $1.2 trillion health-care overhaul narrowly passed the House 220-215. Markey was among 39 Democrats voting against the bill, and she was the only one of the five Colorado Democrats in the House to vote no.

Only one Republican, Joseph Cao of Lousiana, voted in favor of the bill.

The vote is Markey’s most significant break with Democratic leadership since assuming office in January, and it comes on an issue that has long been a priority for her party. She was among about 10 freshmen Democrats prominently targeted by Republicans in 2010 who voted against the bill.

“It was very difficult, not because it was my own party but because it was health care reform that’s so needed in this country, and I desperately want to see us reform our health-care system,” Markey said.

party he belongs to. It certainly isn't because he's wrong, is it? Unless you agreed with the War in Iraq, or with bailing out Wall St. And now with bailing out the failing Private Insurance Industry. Or with privatizing Social Security and Medicare. Or telling women that they have no right to make their own medical decisions. I don't blame those who are right, I blame those who are wrong. Seems a bit backward to do otherwise.

Back when people thought the earth was flat, one guy who pointed out it probably wasn't, was considered a lunatic also. He too didn't have much support. But it didn't make him wrong, and them right.

....it was a tough vote because it can't be explained in a three second sound-bite and it will mostly likely cost Dennis support....but nonetheless, voting against a bill that looks pretty but would do more harm than good, is the epitome of courage....the disgusting process that masquerades as our democracy has been laid bare for all who wants to see....

and studying, teaching, and writing about history an worthless pursuit. Why all we need are reporters who can publish chapter after chapter of congressional votes and that is all we will need to know about the reasonings and justifications behind complex and controversial issues.

Why if we look at the Congressional record, it appears that Democrats were downright weak on civil rights in 1964!

While I support single payer wholeheartedly, I'm also pragmatic enough to realize that a single payer bill would be DOA.

And while there are provisions in the bill I don't like, they can always be stripped away later on. Let's not make the perfect the enemy of the good.

43. K&R
I'd reject this mess too. Putting a "Dem" label on it does not make any old piece of tripe acceptable. Acceptable doesn't mean it has to be single payer. But Stupak and mandates have to go, and a public choice has to be at least in there, and hopefully better than this is. As is, it isn't enough to justify Stupak and mandates.

Those will probably be left in and the PO will probably be eliminated entirely. If so, it needs to be rejected.

DK is the wake-up call, he's the canary in the mineshaft. Add to that, NOW's opposition. Dems shouldn't be so psyched about this. And it'll likely get worse. The failure would be to even consider passing such a thing.

45. Then the Republicans were brave, too.
So the Republicans, and Dennis Kucinich all have our best interests at heart. They all voted exactly the same. I get it now. It's all about the intentions. :eyes:

69. The Republicans weren't being pressured by their leaders to vote Yes.
So Republicans who voted No weren't brave.

63. He's for health care reform. Not insurance reform, as Obama calls it.
He's a sponsor of the single-payer bill and he and Conyers have successfully brought on 87 other sponsors.

68. Kucinich wants stronger health care reform.
He got an amendment put into the bill to clarify that states can still choose single-payer.

That amendment was removed from the bill before the vote, and Kucinich wrote that it was under pressure from the Obama Administration.

"An amendment which would have protected the rights of states to pursue single-payer health care was stripped from the bill at the request of the Administration."

77. Yes, they took out a single payer amendment and put in
an anti-women's rights' amendment. So, who are the Democrats more afraid of? And progressives are supportive of this. I wonder how many women Democrats have lost over this already. It isn't even what it does, it's what it says about how little they care about what the people want or think, and especially women. Airc, women are the largest voting bloc the Dems have. Yet, they have no problem dismissing them. That shows how powerful the corporations are.

That boils down the disgraceful mechanism of corporatists and our Congress perfectly.

60. k*r This bill is a bailout, period
It's about helping out the insurance industry which is about to croak with 1-3% profit margins.

Why are their profits so low? They provide no value and they've been buying each other up for
a long time. Like Wall Street, they're at the end of the road.

Who do you call? The Money Party

This health care "reform" is really just more of the "long con." It's pure shilling for
corporate interests.

67. I don't recall Obama saying in 2007 or 2008 that he wants states...
...to be able to choose single-payer.

Obama said he was for single-payer in 2003.

73. If Kucinich wasn't in the Democratic Party,
who would be there to tells us that:

*Single Payer Universal HealthCare is not only possible, but cheaper.

*that "For Profit" HealthCare is obscene

*that Mandatory Health Insurance is NOT REALLY Universal HealthCare

*that the Democratic Party and American taxpayers should NOT be forced to subsidize some of the richest CEOs in history by subsidizing the HealthCare Insurance Corps and HMOs.

*that the USA SHOULD give the Imperial Palace (Green Zone) back to the Iraqis, close the permanent bases, expel all Corporate Consultants, withdraw ALL US Troops, and begin paying reparations NOW.

*that redeploying some troops at some future date is a PRO-WAR position.

*that the "Oil Law Benchmark" supported by the Democratic Party is a War Crime

*That we can have election accountability with "Paper Ballots publicly hand counted at the precinct".

*that we CAN cut $Hundreds of Billions$ from the Defense Budget and STILL spend more on WAR than any country in the WORLD.

*that the RICHEST Corporations in history do NOT need $Billions$ in welfare subsidies

*that NAFTA (Free Trade) has not been a good thing for Americans who have to work for a living

*that prosecuting Torturers & War Criminals is NOT optional.

*that the USA should join the rest of the civilized World in banning Land Mines

*that the USA should join the rest of the civilized World in the International Criminal Court.

Thank You, Dennis Kucinich!
