9. Remember, though, that this is now a site where people are accused of being Trotskyites |
|
if they dissent from the official White House line in any way.
In a context like that, it's probably unwise to expect much knowledge of Moore's films.

15. Staples must be running low on brown envelopes after the lobbyists stuffed all that cash |
|
into them and slid them under hundreds of restaurant tables in DC. A lot of new Cadillacs, new vacation houses, ranches, and college educations for congresspeople's children were paid for this last month or so.

17. Just like Grayson said Americans don't care if the bill is bi-partisan or not -- |
|
Do you really think that someone who was about to be dropped from their coverage, or that someone who was told they should divorce their spouse in order to qualify for government assistance with insurance for their chronically-ill child, or someone who is ill and cannot find an insurance company to insure them, or someone who had some minor issue years ago, but now cannot find an insurance company to insure them, or someone who cannot now afford a full dosage of life-saving medicine that they need --
Do you really think, given the passage of the healthcare reform bill that would address these issues and provide relief to these people -- that they will give a toss that "the corporations won."
Or if the bill is defeated, they will rush into the streets to thank those who pummelled it into oblivion?
I get the rage over the "corporations." But what I don't get is the utter disregard for people who could be helped by the bill as it is right now.

18. I understand what you're saying . . . but lets think about the big picture |
|
I'm not saying we shouldn't go ahead and pass this in the short term BUT here is what we all know will come from it if there isn't serious re-working from the get-go. Yes, those with pre-existing conditions will finally get coverage . . . although not immediate from my understanding . . . problem is that without competition from the government . . . insurance companies will charge you enough to make a profit . . . no matter what . . . . they will NOT give you anything . . . so don't kid yourself. If your needed treatment costs 5000/mo now . . . they will charge you 6000/mo to have insurance for the same treatment. Everybody's rates will go up because of this bill because there is no competition to keep the rates down. The biggest difference is that NOW you'll HAVE to buy insurance . . . who benefits from that??? The corporations . . . not the average American. Your quality of care will not improve, your expense will not go down . . . but you will now be forced to pay for insurance or break the law.
I/we do want everyone to be insured . . . in an affordable way. This bill is not that.

19. Okay, I think we have common ground in wanting to get people insured. :) |
|
Edited on Tue Nov-10-09 05:22 PM by quiet.american
A couple things, though -- the bill includes a National High-Risk Pool that will immediately provide health insurance access to those who haven't been able to get coverage for various reasons, so there is some immediacy available -- (granted: immediate means once you apply and it's processed -- no guarantees on the time frame there, but I'm sure they'll want this to work and so won't drag their feet).
The bill contains caps on the amount of out-of-pocket that individuals and families can pay in any given year, and it's well below $5k-$6k a month (I believe it's $5k/year, individual and $10k/yr, family).
I'm not sure I entirely agree it doesn't make healthcare affordable -- the affordability credits, caps, tax credits and inclusion of no co-pays for preventative services goes a long way.

21. Lately it's been easier than I ever thought it would be to get that impression. |
|
There have been some really callous responses to others making their case for why they personally want the bill to pass that did really surprise me.
Good talking to you, though. :hi:

22. You're right. People are getting heated up and reacting strongly |
|
sometimes without thinking first. When I think about 5 people dying per hour because they're uninsured or under-insured it makes me nauseous. At the same time . . . a bad bill like this one . . . and seeing the Dems cave unnecessarily on so many things . . . also make me nauseous.
