Questioning Cindy Sheehan |
Cindy recently came to Omaha, Nebraska to give a speech at the Peace Conference at UNO. She had some valid points and answered every question asked of her but what surprised me was that, truthfully she wasn't a very good speaker. She was kind of shaky and poorly composed. It surprised me because she gives so many of these speeches that I was expecting something else. This seems to happen a lot though. I had a friend that told me he attended a lecture by my favorite person in the world, Howard Zinn and he was terrible. I am always surprised when key people in modern movements have poor speaking skills. Anybody else notice this with other movers and shakers?

1. She speaks from her heart |
Personally, I'd much rather listen to a "terrible" speaker like her, who I know is speaking from her heart, rather than some slick politician who's been trained in giving public speeches, and you never know whether they're being truthful or not.

2. Public Speaking is a difficult skill to master. |
Few people can really do it well. Most are bad because they care too much about what they are saying and are concerned about how the audience sees them. The best speakers aren't too concerned about how they appear and are confident on how they come across to an audience.
I find a lot of writers are poor public speakers. They write because they are good writers not because they are good speakers.
