A solution to the "I don't want to fund abortions w/ my taxes" debate. |
|
I have thought about this for a long time, because I don't want to fund wars which sanctions the killing of babies full grown. I have never been given the choice of where MY tax dollars go, but here is a solution.
The Federal Government should make an annual detailed shopping list when they do the budget. We each get a copy with our tax return. Each year when I do my taxes, I can check off exactly where I want my money to go. Lets let the U.S. citizens truly put their money where their mouth is. If 50% of us don't want to fund war, I can bet 50% do. If it turns out that most of us want war I can then decide if I want to live in this country. If 50% choose to fund abortions, I suspect 50% won't, but if it turns out the balance upsets you, then you can decide to leave. I for one would like to fund education, if there ends up being no money for war, I guess war is done.
Citizen's would have to Lobby for sure, but it would look more like democracy, and all the faux outrage could be done.

6. there is a law against using federal funds for abortions.. It isn't about what people want |
|
it is about the law (one that the SCOTUS has upheld)
We need to deal with this through Planned Parenthood or other similar entities

7. I am saying the law is wrong. |

If the federal law says we don't fund abortions it is because SOMEONE is against the taking of life, without distinction. I am saying that War takes life, and we have given it a distinction that makes it "ok". To Whom? It is not ok with some to take a life ever, and I respect that, but if we are talking Federal dollars, i.e. my tax dollars, a choice should be a choice. Clearly the right to lifers are influencing this decision about the health care over-hall.
I believe we need a "federal Money" a "tax" over-hall.
It is my money, let me choose where it goes.

8. And the federal government can hire 100,000 CPAs and business analysts |
|
to track it all.
That should make a dent in unemployment. Tie the budget to personal 'donation' preferences like United Way does.
Go for it. :D

9. The logical end of that |
|
is that if you don't want to fund the federal government at all, you keep your money... I'd go for that

10. I'm sure taxes from people that check nothing will become discretionary budget. |

This sounds like a good idea.

12. No, you have to pay your taxes, you just choose for what. |
|
The country can't run without money, that is clear. But putting our money where we deem it necessary, would change the shape of our society to one which spends on what it thinks is important. It is scary, but we might get a truer take on what the populous wants than even elections, because it would be harder to rig... I think.

17. Exactly. What ever is on the list, there is bound to be something you find worthy. |
|
Of course 100 years down the road it would be a mockery with all funds leading to the military industrial complex, disguised as vanilla/chocolate sounding things. It would be a start for right now, and would change the dynamic and cut out the middle man. Right now we vote in the "Representative" who spends our money. In this case the Representative would be there to put the right things on the list. Good job, we check it and pay, bad job we skip to the next item. They would have to please US to get our money. Like Molly Ivens said... Dance with the ones that brung em.

13. Well but then you might be against taxes, I am not. |
|
The highest taxed countries seem to have the highest social services, except here. I am not against taxes. What would be Democratic was choosing. Tax revenue by the people for the people, etc. We decide.

16. So those that pay the most in taxes get all of their needs met, while the poor get fucked |

Sounds like a great way to get the rich behind progressive taxation though.

18. The rich pay less than us! Proportionately. We small time payers can add up quick. |
|
We proved that with the last 3 elections. Our money counts when we have control over it. The status quo sucks, period full stop. I am helpless while my money funds wars that I am DEAD SET AGAINST. I mean TOTALLY AGAINST! My choice is to be a "good german" (IN MY EYES... NO FLAMES) or break the law and put my kids in jeopardy. If I had a choice, I could fund other things with my money. I would prefer needle exchange to war 100%, but most likely my meager funds would go to MY interests. Music, Art, Education, Health, Poverty, etc.

And maybe I still do, in a tough love kind of way, but how long do you really want to go without roads or schools? I thought that if people were able to experience the effect of where their bucks went and why taxes are important, they'd "get it". But I don't know that this is true anymore. If it were up to the voters, African Americans and women would still not have the right to vote as we've seen with the Gay Marriage votes. There's always going to be a segment of the population which is batshit crazy and selfish and hateful and I think they'd revel in the destruction of social services.
