Shumer skewers Gonzo at impromptu press conference in hearing room
Edited on Thu Apr-19-07 12:02 PM by Divernan
Schumer held an impromptu press conference with about 20 reporters
crowding around him in the hearing room. He scathingly skewered Gonzalez' testimony from every possible direction and pointed out that it was important for reporters and everyone to understand two separate issues.

(1) One was investigating what happened in the Justice Department regarding the firing/forced resignation of US Attorneys.

(2)The other was the issue of whether Gonzales was competent to function as Attorney General of the United States. Schumer concluded that based on all the information so far available - testimony of others, documentation, etc., as well as Gonzales own testimony this morning, that Gonzales was not only unfit to serve as AG, but that Gonzales clearly was less competent than any of the US Attorneys who were fired/dismissed.

Shumer concluded that Bush was so deep in the bunker, he would not do what either Regan or Bush Sr., would have done. Shumer said that if either of those presidents' AGs had performed so badly as Gonzo, they would be gone after today's testimony. "And that's the difference between those administrations and the current (W's) one!", said Shumer.

3. I know, I heard it on C-Span 3.
Now let's see if it makes it to the corporate news.

4. Schumer is not going to reward Gonzales for his loyalty to a miserable president.
Gonzales is toast.

5. Thanks for consolidating that; I heard Schumer but didn't think to
take notes. And FYI, here's a live link (still on-remote?) that had the impromptu p.c.

7. Hey, no notes, babe! Those words were just burned in my brain!
New Yorkers can be prouder of Shumer than we Pennsylvanians can be of Specter. But everyone in Utah should be ashamed of Orin Hatch - and we in Pennsylvania too, cause Specter got his law degree from Pitt!

8. Interesting - revenge is a dish best served cold!
Nobody has a longer memory than a politician. That explains perhaps why Shumer gave a sort of compliment to the Regan administration.
