Our Dad...
To those on The Democratic Underground:

We think that many of the people on this forum know our father, "H2O Man." This is the political site he likes the best. So we want to share some information with you about Dad.

For the past month, we’ve known that he has some serious health issues. But he is a stubborn sort - not possessing the insight to practice the same level of care for himself, that he does for others.

This weekend, it hit a crisis point. While preparing for family friends to come over in the evening to watch a championship boxing match, he began to take on a gray, sweat-soaked appearance. He refused to cooperate with Mom’s and my efforts to get him to the Emergency Room. Finally, my brother Darren picked him up and carried him to his jeep.

To make a long story medium length, it turned out that his abdominal wall had a rather long and wide rip, and his intestines had wrapped about his stomach. From the ER, he was taken via ambulance to a fine hospital that specializes in such things. Mom and Darren said that Dad did his comedy routine right up until they put him under for the surgery. The operation was successful - and his predictions for the fight were right on the money.

When he returns to our home, his doctors have ordered him to do nothing for six weeks. For this reason, we would politely request your kind assistance. Mom would hope that people on The Democratic Underground will help keep "H2O Man" pre-occupied with entertaining himself on The Democratic Underground. Can you help?

In keeping with his unique ability to wax and wane poetically and politically, I must paraphrase Albert Murray, the Tuskagee scholar, and say that Dad and DU are the long heirs and continuators of the most indigenous mythic prefiguration of the most fundamental existential assumptions which underlie the human preposition we recognize as the Declaration of Independence, perhaps especially being highlighted by the Emancipation Proclamation (not to mention the Gettysburg Address, both of which Dad is convinced are fully needed today), all of which is further particularized in the Bill of Rights in that Constitution that our Father, who art in recovery from painful surgery, so often talks about.

We would appreciate your help with this. He really does listen to people on this site, even if he comes across as a stubborn, opinionated grumpy old man. We like that he finds this site an inspiration for the countless letters and phone calls he makes, to politicians and newspaper editors. If anyone here wants us to pass a message on to him, we’d be happy to do so.

"Keep fighting ‘the Good Fight!’"

Corey, on behalf of the Sons & Daughters of "H2O Man"

343. Thanks, Tavalon!
Our Connor spent 2 weeks in the NICU because he was born early and was only 3.5 lbs. Besides having to put on some weight and having to learn how to eat, he had no other problems. We loved our NICU nurses and are still thankful for taking such good care of him.

I think he has dad's genes - I wasn't a very cute baby :)

47. I already have a project request for H2O Man....

Is that inappropriate to ask so soon? LOL

I'm trying to research AARP as it relates to the HCR bill. I don't know if it's okay to tell my mom, "trust AARP's myth versus fact" section or not given their potential vested interest via their own insurance plan offered as a Medigap policy.

All this Medicare stuff is VERY new to me.

I'm mentioning here in case this is the type of thing our dear H2O Man might want to dive into for the clueless such as myself. The seniors are being scared to death but I don't know one truly reliable resource to use to provide reassurance. If AARP is that resource -- even if not perfect -- that's cool. I'll go with them.

:)

More hugs to H2O Man and family!!!

168. I've been dealing with Medicare for a long time.
I've been on Medicare for over 10 years, and I'm not scared. We need to extend Medicare for everyone.

Medigap policies differ from state to state, and AARP's plan is not the best one for me. Her specific situation will determine what Medigap and Part D (prescription) policy is the best for her, but I don't believe (can't guarantee 100%, since the bill isn't the final version) that the HCR bill, at least as it exists now, is nothing for Medicare beneficiaries to fear. If Medicare could get a handle on the fraud (very big "if"), we could provide Medicare For All and not raise anybody's taxes.

"Read, every day, something no one else is reading. Think, every day, something no one else is thinking. Do, every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do. It is bad for the mind to continually be part of unanimity." ~Christopher Morley

To me, this quote IS you. Your posts always contain passages from books I usually have not read, your posted thoughts on the real issues at hand broaden my thinking beyond where they had been before reading your posts. As to the "do every day, something no one else would be silly enough to do", well, I don't know for sure but, I suspect, this too would be attributable to you as well, lol.

Come "home" soon as we count on YOU to keep us on DU "entertained" and to prod us to think 'larger'.

Rule #2: listen to your family.

Consequences for not following rules # 1 & 2:

48. Ya know, I have been ruminating on a recent post of his
In a reply to a Pitt OP thanking the admins for DU, your dad made a very important post regarding the need to "...re-focus on keeping up the quality of discussion...".
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=6998966#7000895

He was spot on, but that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who reads him regularly.

Trying to think of him when I take the browser to DU these days. Trying to do less petty and more substantial DU reading. Trying not to get suckered into all the drama as that is giving in to the RW tactics of diversion, division, degradation.

This morning, I posted a trite, snarky reply to an OP on a certain attention seeking former beauty pageant participant. To atone for my weakness, I hunted up something of substance from one of the online papers I read which is not a widely used source here at DU. Posted something that may really have an impact on AZ politics and go wider to other states if the GOP pol's suggestion gathers momentum.

H2O Man brings good stuff to our little virtual coffee table. I want him well and strong again. If we need to tap dance a bit here to make him behave for your mom, count me in!

Why just before clicking link to this thread, I was considering a PM to him to ask if he could babysit my thread and kick it now and then when I am at work. My threads do not have the pow and power of his; they sink like rocks. But he has always been a kind mentor and helpful.

Maybe I will just PM him any tasty tidbits I find so he can do his waterman magic on the topics to do them justice if he finds them worthy. Important, and oft missed issues deserve good exposure. H2O Man is the best for the job. ALWAYS.

Please tell him ol havocmom sends healing energy for his complete and speedy recovery. He is a great force around here. He is a gentle reminder that we should try to be as good as we want the world to be. If I could have picked my own father, I would have picked one like him.

But this is ridiculous!

I had to swallow my heart after reading the first 2-3 paragraphs of this message. How happy and relieved
I am to hear you are repaired and will get better. Take the advice of the "real doctors" as well as the tribal kind (if you are lucky enough to be near one besides yourself) and rest blissfully, dear H2OMan.

Time to take a break from the storm of political discourse and contemplate a teapot with not a hint of a tempest inside--just some nice healing tea. How blessed you are with offspring of such eloquence and courage. Rest and recuperate as quickly as your mind works. With all my best wishes to you and yours.

55. Oh, thanks for posting and letting us know the situation!
H2O man is one of the more important contributors to this board. Tell him to listen to the doctor so he can get better. We can't afford to lose him and his knowledge and opinion while this country is still in such a mess. It's people like him who keep the rest of us fired up to put the pressure on our elected officials to stop the rampant corruption in this country that they are often a part of.

58. Your Dad is one of my all time favorite DUers!
He always reminds me of the stubborn, opinionated, grumpy old men in my family that we all love and hold dear.

Good for you and your family by taking that bull by the horns and forcing the issue. He taught you well:) That's exactly what he would have done if the shoe was on the other foot, right?

Stubborn folks like our H2O Man usually do quite well in these situations. Once reality smacks them in the face and there's no argument about there actually being an issue, the stubbornness can work in their favor. I'm counting on this being the situation here. I'm more inclined to send out the positive vibes to you and your family because I'm betting this guy is going to drive you all a little nuts... which is ultimately a very good sign!

But to H20 Man... dude... we need you. So many times you are the voice of reason here. When the rest of us get caught up in the emotions and wedges that divide us, you cut through the nonsense like a hot knife through butter. We can't do that alone. So please, follow the doctors' orders and don't argue with them, dammit!

Be well, friend.

Of course that will entail listening to your loved ones and spending a couple of weeks chatting with us here. Your voice is needed here, so please take care of yourself. I'm sure your family doesn't want to do without you either, so by taking the time to mend well you will be pleasing many people by just lounging around--pretty easy assignment. :)

Thank you, Corey and all of the family of H2O Man for sharing with us what we can do to help. I wish your family all of the best.

69. Thank you so much, Corey, for letting us know what's happening with your dad!
He has always been the brightest light of all on DU to me; when I read the first few lines of your post my breath froze in terror that you were about to drop the worst news possible. I cannot begin to describe the huge relief I felt as I read the rest of your post to find out that he's going to be all right and has not been taken away from you and us. Wheeeew!

H2O Man has always been an inspiration, and has always been kind and supportive to me personally. And, as you can see by the other posts on this thread, he is much beloved by countless other DUers.

Sending love and good wishes and prayers for his full and speedy recovery, and enormous gratitude to you and the rest of your family for your thoughtfulness in sharing this news with your father's DU family -- and for sharing him with us, period. :loveya:

Tell him to take care of himself, dammit! DU would be immeasurably diminished without his voice.

With love,
sw

How very like our friend H2O Man this story is. I don't think it surprises ANYONE here that he, who is always looking to give a boost to the hesitant and an encouraging word to those of us with flagging resolve, that he would put himself last.

Stubborn & grumpy?. .maybe at home, but not here. And there are plenty here older than him.

We always look forward to his essays. I hope that he will check in here VERY soon.

We're talking about H2Oman here, not me, although I almost got a personalized license plate attaching H20 to the end of my name to celebrate being elected to the water board. So I could have been manH2O.

But on DU, H2Oman is generally considered the font of all wisdom, or at least a scholar and sage of the highest order, even by me, when I am arguing with him and seeming to insult him.

I am glad that he made it through his surgery.

123. I promise to learn a new (for me) DU behavior for H2O Man.
Every time I come to DU, I will conduct a DU search on H2O Man = Author to find if and where he is at the current time and, if I can find H2O Man, I will pop in and visit him and perhaps even have something to add to his already rich discourse, IF that's possible.

...................................................

You have helped me more than you know through the darkness of this last couple of years as I lost my Paul. Please cooperate with all of those who love you and Get Well!

and, unfortunately was caught too late, he passed away 48 hours later.

We will give H2O Man the 'Rope a Dope'

We will engage him and actually make him think that we are listening to him but nobody at DU actually listens to anybody so its only an illusion. In two weeks he will be just fine and he will think that he has hundreds of fellow progressives that have been hanging on to his every word!!!

Thank you Corey, you sound like a chip off the old block to me, to inform us so gently and brilliantly.
I can only send best wishes to your Dad, and a grateful hello to you. You will be in my thoughts with the best of wishes.

I am going to assume that there will be lots of entertainment and many letters from people you know well. If ever you get bored, write to me. Or come to the photo forum where we have such a fine time together and there is a lot to see.

I am sending heartfelt and grateful greetings all the way around.

Opinionated? Absolutely! But stubborn and grumpy? Those are two words I would never use to describe your dad! He is a voice of wisdom and reason on this site, and we just love him to pieces for it. My prayers go out to him for a speedy recovery, and also prayers of thanks that he has such a family who conspire with us to keep him healthy and opinionated for many years to come.

Your father is one of the most intelligent and helpful people on this site. I am so glad that your family made him go to the hospital..and that the surgery has been successful.
I am sure you are anxious for him to be home, as we all are anxious to hear from him

Perhaps, when he gets home, he needs to become one of the mods, so he will have to keep a close eye on DU for a while.

Please send best wishes for a safe and speedy recovery. We all look forward to his return...

163. H2O Man is a vital resource for DU, a source of acute insight that we need desperately
Edited on Mon Nov-16-09 05:21 PM by Nothing Without Hope
He ALWAYS says something that makes the best way forward easier to find. His compassion and wisdom are always there. Sometimes he even shares beautiful photos of the forests, singing water and stony places he loves, bringing calm, peace and a longer view. He is our respected and beloved elder brother, whatever our relative ages actually are. I've never seen him as "grumpy," in his postings here. Stubborn? Oh yeah, and thank goodness for it.

I want to try to make my point clearer. First, he often knows important back-story to put current events into badly needed perspective, so we can see the bigger picture. But there's another part of this, too. The news on all fronts is often frustrating and it can numb and de-energize to keep reading of terrible things and complacent, stupid and greedy politicians who are not reacting as they ought. It can be so depressing that one starts to feel "what can I do? why not just give up?" Here is where your Dad's wisdom and, yes, his stubbornness, are not to be done without. He keeps that light burning in all of us, not by ranting and pushing hate, but by reminding us of what the fight really is, how strong we can be if we don't lose hope, and how beautiful the world and people can be. The opposite of pessimism and despair.

Please give him our love and remind him that he shouldn't treat such a tremendously important resource for good (himself) carelessly. Thanks for carrying him off and getting him fixed up. and for telling us what happened.

194. A Song for H2O Man
This song reminds me of H2O Man, because he is a "holyman" to me, in more ways than one. I hope your dad recovers swiftly and returns here before too long. Sending your dad healing light and vibes!

Also you might want to bookmark this thread for your dad, I'm sure he would appreciate ALL the shout-outs and well wishes. He is a valued treasure here within the DU Family.

Riverman: David Sylvian and Robert Fripp

I see your eyes light up like fire
It's medicine to me
But as the hunted live their lives
You're keeping out of reach

So I keep running, falling
Till I reach the water
Run with me holyman
But when I reach out
I find I'm standing right beside her
Now we're living
Blessed with all the thunder in the world

Now, should you ask me to come home
To wake up from the sleep
Like a boat inside a storm
Is there no hope for me?

So I keep running, falling
Wade into the water
Run with me riverman
But when I reach out
I find I'm standing right beside her
Now we're living
Blessed with all the thunder in the world

grumpy old man?

Well just the other day I commented that H20 Man always treated everyone with respect, be they in agreement, or not.
I have tremendous respect and love for the man, and always take what he says to heart, because he is also a wise man.

232. Cory - thanks for letting us know!
I think my standard 'don't make me come down there' would frighten him into submission as it might others as he is a tough one. I think we all have been guilty of ignoring pain and/or a health condition hoping it just may go away on its on so I can't quite chastise him too much. But I do hope he takes care of himself and takes it easy these next few weeks.

Don't have an assignment for him but would certainly appreciate reading his musings whilst sitting looking out the window toward his pond. Random or focused... he writes so well all thoughts written down would be welcome. :)

274. You've raised a fine son. Time to listen to him and the rest of the family

Your health is the only job you have right now. Your son says the word is, stay busy writing and online and put other things aside. It will allow healing to occur more efficiently and for a longer duration. Sounds like a win-win proposition to me and my recommendation (and you always have a recommendation from me;) is to follow that advice and find some peace, here, in a book or elsewhere as per doctors orders.

I wish you the very best and I'm sure that you're going to take care of your health and entire being.

Peace. I wish you the very best recovery you can have.

Mike

276. oh, wow... very sorry to hear that, but thank you so much for sharing, and i can see he is in
very good hands.

i've always enjoyed and appreciated (and look forward to) his interesting and informative posts (i've been reading DU since spring, 01) in fact, his handle (H20 Man) is one of the ones that i have gotton into the habit, over the years, of clicking before I even read the subject/title of his post.

i never knew his age, but i have always thought of him as a wise, tough, father figure on DU, glad to hear he is one in real life, too.

thanks for sharing Coery, and please send my warm regards and best wishes for a speedy, and painless recovery to your dearest father :toast:

288. There are some people who are essential to this world. My Mom and
Dad were two of them. Your Dad is too. I find it amazing how they fight the love that people give them when they are hurt and won't cooperate. It makes you want to snatch them bald headed as my grandpa used to say. Give in to the love, H20 Man. Let it wash over you. Your kids love you so much and if you stick around by doing what you're told when you get down, then you will be their lynch pin just that much longer.

This place needs you. Your family needs you. Do what you're told, honey. It isn't an admission of weakness. Its an acknowledgement of strength.

RV, who sends you the best.

Healing energies and much love sent your way.

and I recalled something from GB Shaw: "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man." ("Man and Superman," Maxims for Revolutionists)

H20 Man: Take care of yourself. Take time to rest and heal. I look forward to your posts sharing your thoughts and provoking ours.

303. On behalf of my absent wife, I want you wish your Dad well.
He has raised a remarkable Corey, I would say, and your words do your Father great honor. I'm new here and never read anything quite as loving and touching as your post.

My wife, who is known on Democratic Underground as Tangerine LaBamba, is not available, but I know she would join me - at gunpoint, if necessary - in wishing every good thing for your Father, who sounds like a very smart, very lucky, and very stubborn man who was wise enough not to resist when Darren picked him up and did the right thing.

A blessing on all your heads. You have much to be thankful for this coming holiday season.

Rejoice.

Ishka

353. Sending hugs & prayers for a speedy recovery...
And now for me to get to studying! If I am going to engage H2O Man and help keep him occupied, i'd better have my game on!

So glad that he is doing okay and we look forward to seeing him here in the weeks to come!

359. Are you kidding me - look at the
replies - we can keep him busy as long as the doctors order. Consider the 'intervention' on.

Whenever I'm away from DU for a few days something unusual always happens.

367. Too late to recommend...
H20 Man...Keep up the good fight... the one for your health... and the one for greater information and analytical thought about that information and what it means for an informed electorate.

As an old ad used to say... "We'll keep the light on" for you!

Peace!
