NY has nuclear event

http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=eng

Ginna nuclear power plant in Ontario, Wayne County, is in the midst of cleaning up a small radioactive contamination spill on the plant’s site. According to an incident report filed with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, workers were replacing a section of piping Thursday at an excavation site at the plant when sediment from the pipe spilled out. According to the report, the contamination involved cesium 137, the radioactive form of the metal. No contamination was found at a nearby plant monitoring well, indicating the contamination likely did not spread beyond the spill site itself. The Ginna plant employs 450 people.

What's that I hear? It's the sound of crickets.

If it ain't nuclear, it ain't a problem.

A most excellent point.

Edit: here's the RSOE listing for that incident

4. It's cesium, so I'd worry more about toxicity than radioactivity
In fairness, it's pretty nasty stuff. But, yeah, I'd like to see other generation methods given as much scrutiny as nuclear power is given.

12. so there is a problem w/ being aware of this?
I think ALL environmental events such as this should be reported.

2. Remember the hoopla about the new supercollider?
Somebody was saying it could create a giant black hole that would destroy the universe.

The scientists looked at his paper, and responded that the result he wrote about would be "very unlikely". That wasn't what people wanted to hear.

To a scientist, "likely" and "unlikely" don't mean the same things they do to a layman.

Anytime someone farts at a nuclear power plant, ensho is quick to warn the world of a nuclear event!

15. more like nuclear non-event
Do you know the story about the boy who cried wolf? The more stories you post about safety procedures working exactly as they're supposed to at nuclear power stations, the smaller your audience gets and the less attention you'll get when you have something actually worth bringing to people's attention.

Individual things go wrong all the time, even in nuclear power plants. That's why you have safety systems and redundancy, because things breaking or going wrong is a fact of life and any good engineer will take the possibility into account when designing a complex system. What's dangerous is when you get a cascade of failures because people are foolish enough to believe failure can be designed away completely and engineer for perfection instead of maintainability.

16. Half life is 30.7 years and t accumulates in and mutates soft tissues causing cancer
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 07:32 PM by Liberation Angel
How can it hurt me?

External exposure to large amounts of Cs-137 can cause burns, acute radiation sickness, and even death. Exposure to Cs-137 can increase the risk for cancer because of exposure to high-energy gamma radiation. Internal exposure to Cs-137, through ingestion or inhalation, allows the radioactive material to be distributed in the soft tissues, especially muscle tissue, exposing these tissues to the beta particles and gamma radiation and increasing cancer risk.

http://www.bt.cdc.gov/radiation/isotopes/cesium.asp

So when it gets leaked onto people (workers) it can kill and stays in the environment (unless contained) for more than 100 years and causes cancer etc for that long.

It is a serious event and I feel bad for these workers and their families.
