Intriguing new theory about cause of multiple sclerosis.
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 11:04 AM by Swede
I hope this is a breakthrough.

A group of doctors in Italy is investigating a fascinating new treatment for multiple sclerosis, based on a theory that, if proven true, could radically alter the lives of patients.

An investigation by CTV's W5 reveals that this treatment appears to stop the disease from progressing. Patients seen in the documentary relate how, after the simple procedure, their MS symptoms suddenly stopped and, in some cases, they were able to resume normal lives.

3. If this is true, it will be as big a breakthrough as discovering the true cause of stomach ulcers,
which were previously thought to be due to excess stomach acid production caused by stress. Then an Australian researcher figured out that the excess stomach acid was a reaction to a bacterial infection. And yes, the medical establishment was skeptical at first.

On the other hand, this could be just another quack remedy.

5. That was said about Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, too
Dr. Z's CCSVI sounds eerily reminiscent of that.

I'll be keeping alert for the research on this as it emerges.

7. I wouldn't rule it out. It just needs further study.
This sounds to me like they made a case to move on to the next step. And at this point in the process, all we have are predictions - so why not test 'em?

8. Interesting and good news
Wow, my dad had known problems with veins in his neck (and should have had surgery to correct). He always had migraines and also had hemochromatosis, which combined with the vascular problems he had, probably left iron in his head. Wonder if all that contributed to some of his other problems.

And then there is me: used to get migraines and cluster headaches regularly and have a problem with iron myself. Hmmm, weakness? check. Chronic pain, oh yeah. vision? going down fast. Mental acuity? failing and more trouble in last half of the day. Do you think I could get a doctor to even consider MS? Maybe I could get someone to consider checking MY neck veins.

10. I give up
I've had several symptoms of MS now several years and I make doctor appointments only to wait, and wait, and wait months on end for my appointment then finally the day comes and i get all but ignored by the doctors.
Last time it took 5 months to just get the appointment. I told the doc about the problems I was having with my legs and the ONLY thing done was a sonogram of my liver and then after waiting another 3 months for my next appointment to see what the results were all that happened was a blood test to test my kidney creatine levels and nothing more.
So since last year I've had 3 appointments. One where I was all but ignored, one sonogram and one blood test. Now the same lame doctor is no longer working there and nobody will even tell me the results and some jack off wants to tell me I couldn't get better health care with a "public option"? I'll have to wait longer? I'll take my chances..
It took a year to get a bare bones insurance plan and the waiting list is so long I would be better off starting from scratch, getting my own medical degree and diagnosing myself, but to bad i could never prescribe my own medications.
I'm a former heroin addict so as a result no doctor will prescribe pain meds to me. It doesn't matter than I can barely stand from the pain.. Gawd forbid I accidentally get pain treatment.. I'll be better off going back to using heroin to control my own pain, but that would get me sent back to jail.. We all know that former heroin addicts are incapable of feeling pain.. Right?

12. You must be Canadian.
I've heard that only Canadians have long waits for treatment like that.

*end sarcasm*

I see that you're in Texas and I'm very sorry for the level of care you are receiving. It's unacceptable.

11. It's very interesting, though I'm not sure about the iron theory...
He'll have to show that iron is cleared in patients receiving the therapy.

It could be something like vasospasm and transient ischemia in patients with these malformations.

I'm looking forward to reading more about this.
