I watched part of his discussion with people in Germany and I think he's a hero. He has real issues with what he was asked to do.

11. This old vet sees him as a Hero |

Stand up to them and let them know how you feel about an illegal war, is my advice to all the men and women in our armed forces. I didn't and still carry the burden of not doing that when I could have while I had the knowledge that our war was illegal too.

An individual's conscience should always come before military orders.

19. duh, it's all about who's team you're on, not whether you're against war. |
|
:sarcasm:
it's amazing to see the tables turn, isn't it? this is bizarro world. we should be prosecuting war crimes, but instead we're debating whether someone with a conscience who disagreed with an illegal war is a hero or a deserter.
i say, it doesn't matter if he's a hero or a deserter. he did the right thing, and that is ALL THAT MATTERS.
i hope more people read your reply.

21. Deserter. If you join the Army you have to accept the fact that the military might send you to war |
|
no matter what, regardless if you agree or not. Its not up to the soldier to decide whether a war is illegal. Thats the deal. He can quit the moment his enlistment is up but until then he is under orders. I have symapthy for him not wanting to go to Iraq, but no sympathy for what he did, he's a deserter.
