14. NO. I happen to think the bits of the tape shown were needed.
And I think people needed to see it.

Are you going to boycott ALL the news media? Because they are ALL going on about VT ad nauseum. ALL of Them.

The other media outlets screaming about nbc showing it are big babies. Any one of them WOULD have shown clips -- especially Fox.

The lead story is THEM - NBC "News"!!
The AG of this country lied to the nation today.
Maybe they'll get to it.
You're right, Alyce - Enough is enough!

31. I meant the keyboard! Not the 'puter...
If the keyboard doesn't have any indication lights,

then it's a cheap piece of crap!!!

Get rid of it and get a 'real' keyboard...with LIGHTS!

Using all caps is considered SHOUTING on a messageboard,

unless you only use it for a word or two for emphasis.

11. NBC put it out there and plastered NBC NEWS all over the video.
They seem to be the guiltiest party here. We expect this tabloid crap from Fox News.

9. I am not going to boycott a news organization for showing news
I know that opinions vary on this, but I think they did their job. I don't want scrubbed news. 32 students at Va. Tech had to look into the hard face of a killer. I think I can bear to look at it myself on television. I am tired of the media trying to "protect" me from seeing the grit and grime of the real world. I want them to show the carnage in Iraq. I want them to show thousands of flag draped coffins coming home. I want them to show homeless people living in squalor. This is my country and I want to see what's happening in it, not what some focus group agrees I should see.

15. Well said, it is news and that is their job to report it.
It takes the mindless dribble about Imus and Anna Nicole Smith of the air for a few days.

19. The rants of a lunatic = "Grit and grime of the real world?"
Edited on Thu Apr-19-07 05:57 PM by high density
There are lots of nuts out there that I don't need to hear from in a news program, like say Rush Limbaugh, Osama bin Laden, or this specific mass murderer. Transcribe it in a book or air it on the History Channel.

I don't want "scrubbed" news (that's why I don't usually watch TV news), but NBC's motives here are quite suspect and IMHO the news value of these incoherent rants is pretty low.

22. I live in a major city and believe me, there are plenty of ranters and ravers out there
That is one of the faces of mental illness right now. Some of us have to deal with it more than others. I see it sometimes downtown. Others see it every day. Others live with or in mental illness. Yes, I think that people need to see it. There's a lot of anger and a lot of mental illness in this country and I think it's the job of the news to report it.

10. I'm watching it now.
What about when Ruby and Oswald were shot on LIVE TV?
I don't remember any protests about the news showing it,
although I was very young at the time.

What about when JFK, MLK and RFJ were shot?
That's repeated over and over and over every year!!

I feel bad for the families but it is news.
If people don't want to see it, then don't watch.

16. Unless you get Nielsen families (or the equivalent) involved . . .
A boycott doesn't mean anything.

I gave up on TV news years ago -- right after I got my first fast Internet connection. While lots of people still get the bulk of their news from TV, I don't think it has anything like the same power it once did. CNN in Gulf War I was the high-water mark and it's been downhill ever since. Especially with troglodytes like Fux News in the mix and the autolobotomization of the other on-air channels in response to Fux's commercial success.

I'm an optomist -- I'm convinced that over time, TV news will become almost entirely irrelevant, and we'll be left with print/net journalism, imbibed as a cocktail, as the primary way news is absorbed.

17. makes no sense
They aired it because it was newsworthy. He never talked, nobody yet had any insight on his thoughts, even his roommates. Every nightly newscast in the country led with the video, no matter the network. All the cable news plastered it. NBC Nightly News had blowout ratings. They only aired a few minutes of hours worth of footage. They edited out footage which could have brought racial hostilities. Enough with the censorship talk.

18. Oh yes, let's demand to see soldiers' coffins and dead and wounded troops
...because otherwise Americans are too detached from what's going on in Iraq, but let's boycott NBC for showing the ravings of a dead murderer? Why is one acceptable and the other not, please?

...shouldn't we also be boycotting Keith Olbermann, since he works for NBC and devoted most of last night's show to the same matter?
