Bush won't let Gonzales go. That's my bet. Al is too good of a straw |
man. My sense is that Gonzales protected Rove and the President today. I think that because of the way he answered the questions that DF asked about "who put the names on the list?" No answer there from AG because, at least it was clear to me, Rove put the names on this list. So Al allowed himself to look like an incredible incompetent to protect his President and the President's "brain". Bush knows what he's got here...a man who has given his life to Bush and who will give his life for Bush. Al will stay around and in the process, he will cripple and degrade the Justice Department. But they never cared about the Justice Department in the first place. Al will stay around and keep getting kicked around. And Bush is betting that, at some point, people will tire of kicking Al around or that there will be a backlash. Bush is really playing his cards on this one. There won't be much left of Al when this is over, but, as my son pointed out to me earlier today, Al is the guy who endorsed torture.

4. There is also the problem with the replacement |
The Dems simply would not seat a replacement that didn't have some distance from the White House, and for so many reasons I cannot even begin to count they cannot have an independent AG because they would all be in constant and serious legal jeopardy. OR they would be in constant hearings trying to pacify the Dems so they can get a replacement.

From the AG appointments to stop public corruption indictments, the torture memos, illegal wiretapping (I guarantee much of it against political opponents) and sooo much more that hasn't leaked out Gonzo HAS to stay. A new independent AG would blow the lid off the entire administration.

6. One more thing, Gonzales' Hispanic roots will play here. |
It's won't be long before the Administration starts implying that there are racist motives in the criticism of Al. Just wait.
