Stand up if you`re tired of trying to befriend everyone in the room |
|
After watching the never-ending sell-outs in Washington, I`m starting to dream of Rodney King. Can`t we all just get along? You know, like let Lieberman keep his committee chairmanship regardless of his brazillion betrayals. Like send checks to anyone with a (D) after their name, even if their positions (and votes) are identical to the (R)s. Like dig up reasons why torture is okay once in a while and why we might not want to close Guantanamo after all. We can even tweak what the word "change" means and say that Obama`s surge isn`t as bad as Bush`s surge and that four tours of duty is ONLY one more than three.
I`m honestly astounded. So many of Bush`s policies are still in place that I`m starting to look for assorted definitions of the word "change." Oh, but wait...I might be too rigid...too demanding...too...umm...liberal. I should compromise. Be patient. If several more deaperately-needed linguists get booted out of the military this year because of their sexual orientation, well....there`s always next year. If a few hundred more soldiers end up six feet under so we don`t upset one of Bush`s generals, so be it. Compromise. Republicans do it all the time, so why shouldn`t we?
Somewhere along the line we apparently grew fond of mediocre. In other words, if all the factories in my town close down, I should still be grateful that I can go to Wal-Mart and buy a cheap screwdriver. If I see children living in their parent`s car, I should be grateful they`re not chained to some boiler in India`s silk trade. I get it. Compromise. Don`t make the mistake of thinking there are some things worth fighting for no matter what. Right.
I may be alone in this, but I think something is really, really, really screwed up. We hear a lot more about Glen Beck and Sarah Palin than we do about poverty and boarded up factories. The Washington image makers and their Talking Points Assistants have one basic job...get everyone in the room to disbelieve their lying eyes and nod in the affirmative.

I'm much less willing to put up with idiocy at DU now, than I was years ago.
Maybe I'm just getting cranky.

2. we are expected to further diminish |
|
our already diminished expectations...that's what known as compromise. expect it isn't compromise when the other side never gives anything up. our national government is like an abusive partner, and the american people have battered spouse syndrome.

4. At the risk of being way off subject: What is up with your apostrophe? |
|
Are you deliberately typing the ` rather than the ' ? Be careful using the ` ... since it points to the RIGHT.
Sorry, it threw me off. Maybe you^d like to try the ^. It^s very enjoyable.
That being said, I would wholeheartedly agree to a moratorium on Glenn Beck and Sarah (blech) Palin threads here and a more substantive discussion of issues.
But it ain+t gonna happen.
