Disappointed in Jon Stewart's interview with Jeremy Scahill on Blackwater. |
|
Jon seems really uninformed, almost skeptical as to why this is an issue. Booo, Jon! That sucked from the moment you dropped his book.

I bought it recently based on the After Words interview on C-Span. And also Corporate Warriors based on Scahill's suggestion. Reading that one first for a worldwide overview of these soldiers of fortune. It's great with tons of footnotes.
Every once in a while Jon disappoints.

8. Yeah. I'm used to him stepping on people's lines during the interviews |
|
(cuz he's jolly and silly and funny and quick) but thank god Jeremy spoke quickly and was able to spit out alot of info before Jon would open his mouth and derail a really interesting tidbit. Color me annoyed with my beloved Jon tonight! grrr!

2. Uh, isn't there any place for asking questions to get a broad outline? |
|
I mean, for the host to assume that the viewer may not be familiar with the book or Blackwater and needs to learn things from the point of view of someone who has no need of reading the book at all because he/she already knows all the content?
Is there?

skeptical. He's upbeat with people I can barely suffer. I think Scahill is a hero.
Ah well, we have Amy Goodman. And millions say Amy who? Sad. Best investigating and five days a week. Sometimes I wish Democracy Now broadcasted all day - equal in hours to MSNBC, minus the super dramatic prison and legend prgroams. We need the solid serious reportng well as the comedy.
Hope we hear why Jon performed so weirdly.
I didn't know the issue about the House/Senate Bills not covering mercenaries. Is there anything as scary as a wealthy born-again right wing Republican mercenary?

4. I mentioned this on another thread. |
|
He seemed openly standoffish to the guy for some reason, almost as if he didn't like the guy personally for some reason. I dunno. It was just an odd interview for Jon.

5. Today when Amy Goodman asked Scahill to confirm he would be on 'TDS' |
|
tonight Scahill gave a dismissive "that's what I'm told" reply, which was rather weird.
Sounds like neither was too thrilled to be thrown together.

6. Do a detailed interview in three minutes. |
|
I'll judge your performance.
I thought it was good. How do you run a detailed interview, at high speed, on an issue most viewers never really knew existed?
You do it like he did.

9. It wasn't that, it was Jon's demeanor and attitude. Not his usual yellow |
|
lab jumping on the guest's lap and licking their faces (even when it's some evil repuke) and accidentally peeing on their lines because he's so excited; he was indifferent, uninterested, and treated the guy like he was talking to some nut who thought the earth was flat. I guess it was subtle for some to pick up on, but it sure rubbed me the wrong way.

...and it would be nice if people could cut their 99.9-percent-of-the time-hero some slack that other point one percent of the time when he doesn't impress. I've always been irritated by some on DU who are so quick to throw their erstwhile heroes to the wolves, when they drop the ball or underperform in some way once in a very long while.
Give the guy a break, eh? If we were all forced to observe the high standards we set for our heroes all the time, I'd like to see how long most of us would last...including me.

13. I agree! It was odd... |
|
He seemed very off his game. Stewart usually gives such great interviews, too! No matter who the guest, he makes them feel right at home and appears very interested in what they have to say... but this one just felt cold and indifferent, somehow. I thought it was just me. Glad to see I'm not the only one!
Still love Jon, though. :-)

The night before, I had attended a presentation on Erik Prince, Joseph Schmitz and Blackwater. It is quite shocking - the marriage of theocratic views and a dedication to mercenary violent action. Very scary.

17. I thought Jon did fine. |
|
With the limited time frame of the interview in mind, Jon elicited some salient (reads: jaw-dropping) info from Scahill.
I bought the book today; Jon did his job.
