Supreme Court rejects Ohio killer's appeal

WASHINGTON The U.S. Supreme Court today rejected the appeal of James Trimble, who was sentenced to death in 2005 after killing his girlfriend, her 7-year-old son and a student at Kent State University.

The justices, without comment, let stand a unanimous decision last June by the Ohio Supreme Court, which upheld Trimble's conviction by a Portage County jury.

Trimble, 49, killed his live-in girlfriend, Renee Bauer, 42, and her son Dakota at their home in Brimfield Township. Trimble then ran to a nearby home where he took 22-year-old Sarah Positano hostage. When police surrounded the house, Trimble shot and killed Positano, a Kent State student from Canada.

Trimble still has the opportunity to file post-conviction appeals of his death sentence in federal court.
