“The best way to put this behind us is your resignation,” - Sen. Tom Coburn
Edited on Fri Apr-20-07 11:28 AM by Solly Mack
"...put this behind us..."

The "this" being the USA firings - but more importantly, the reasons and motives behind why they were fired.

I don't want Gonzales's resignation to be the end of it all. I don't want his resignation to be framed as a solution to the problem.

His resignation would just be one step in the process (there's that word again) of uncovering the actions and motives that lead up to those firings. Because it's those motives and those actions taken that show the true nature of those firings.

Gonzales resigning isn't enough to "...put this behind us..."

And it never will be - not if we ever hope to to know the truth.

We can't correct all the damage unless we know the extent of the damage - how far up and down the chain it goes.

Framing the resignation of Gonzales has "the best way to put this behind us..." does not serve the purpose of correcting the damage.

He should resign - but "this" won't be "behind us" just because he does.

1. It's a rare moment when I get the opportunity to say something nice about
Tom Coburn.

I appreciated his blunt call yesterday for Gonzales' resignation and he had a nice tie on as well.

Ok. That's it.

3. LOL! We hafta take our moments when we can
But still...I'm concerned by his language. There is more to the DOJ scandal than mere incompetence and we can't let it be framed as simply a case of getting rid of Gonzales.

That's how Rumsfeld walked off into the sunset and Iraq is still a mess - because the corruption goes much deeper than any one person holding any one position. Rumsfeld one just one arm of the problem...the problem itself is much deeper. It's the entire Bush machine.

5. I'm thinking Leahy and Schumer know that and agree with you, but
the shocking thing for me is that Bush won't let it go.

On NPR an hour or so ago, Juan Williams said that Capitol Hill and White House sources are all opposed to keeping Gonzales on, that the feeling that he should resign is wide and deep, but that it seems to be coming down to "the personal relationship" between just two people -- Bush and Gonzales -- left over loyalty from their days in Texas.

If I call the president stubborn and stupid, I doubt if anybody on DU would challenge that, but in this case, it's even worse, since clinging to Gonzales will invite the very scrutiny into his own Oval Office that Bush is presumably trying to avoid.

7. It's only a gamble if they don't get away with it
Part of my thinks they are bitter enders...part of me thinks Gonzales will go if that best protects Rove...and IF it all ends with a Gonzales resignation, Rove is protected.

9. If it stops with Gonzales' resignation, that would be disappointing,
but I'm thinking that Schumer/Leahy et al have more information.

My thought is that Josh Bolten must be swallowing Imitrex by the metric ton this week.

I say that because I believe there have been people inside the DoJ who've been feeding the Judiciary Committee information and documents. I have zero proof of that but the questions yesterday were incredibly forceful -- in some instances more clarifying and sharp than the Senate Watergate bunch.

And except for the sycophantic Orrin Hatch, even Republicans were cool to Gonzales, with Tom Coburn actually calling for him to resign.

Something's up that's good for our side.

I bet Josh Bolten and Fred Fielding are at this very moment planning a Thelma & Louise finish with a hard-charging plunge in a Buick into the Potomac River.

Someone is feeding them something...that letter the other day for example. I'm waiting to see how it will play out.

I just don't want his possible resignation framed as the cure...because it's not.

I may never get over the Thelma and Louise image of Fielding and Bolten going over the ledge...

13. Kersplash! The car smacks the surface of the Hudson in the late Friday
evening haze of rush-hour Washington.

Bubbles and gurgling sounds. Befuddled fish sprint free of the new monster sinking to the garbage-strewn mud at the river's bottom.

Kathunk. The Buick lodges in the mud.

Days later, lower-level Bush officials wonder why they didn't hear back on that last email...

20. The "Hudson"? Crusoe, you fool. You know better than that.
You meant to type "Potomac" there.

Snap out of it, man. Focus!

14. Coburn is a loose cannon... HE is Conservative, but doesn't
go with the memo if you understand what I mean...

18. I follow. It's just that I'd come to associate him with his warning to
Oklahomans about "rampant" lesbianism in that state's high schools.

Prior to the good doctor's admonition, I wasn't aware of it being such an urgent challenge to life there.

"Loose cannon" is right.

2. No, the BEST way is to indict and convict everyone who broke the law.
THAT'S how we should "put this behind us".

11. Ol' Tom
is attempting damage control. He is not supporting the rule of law or justice. He is trying to sweep it under the rug along with Gonzales. I am hoping that those who are concerned with finding the truth will continue to pursue it whether Gonzales is the AG or not. It became very clear early on his testimony that the Republicans on the committee realized the AG had no real defense or adequate explanation or documentation to refute others' previous testimony. So they are hoping this will go away with the resignation of Gonzales.

16. That's exactly the feeling I got from the republicans during
testimony. I wasn't impressed with the bluster because I've seen it before from them

I hope the truth is pursued.
