BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Former President Clinton planned to use his fundraising skills to help the Alabama Democratic Party Friday night and his popularity to help his wife's presidential campaign in Alabama.

Clinton was not accompanied by his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, who was in New York to speak to the Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network. But political observers said his efforts benefited his wife's chances in Alabama's presidential primary on Feb. 5.
David Lanoue, chairman of the political science department at the University of Alabama, said Democrats view President Clinton's two terms as a "golden period" for the party. "Any time Bill Clinton shows up, it's better for Hillary.">
Gerald Johnson, pollster for the Alabama Education Association, is in the middle of conducting a statewide presidential poll, but he said the preliminary indications are it will end up like one he did in late February, with Clinton leading, Obama second, and John Edwards and Al Gore about tied for third.
The pollster said Bill Clinton appears more popular in Alabama now than when he left office.(The local news @ 9:00;" As expected, the former President was great")
