6. You could get an "I" at the college I attended...
Edited on Mon Dec-14-09 10:10 AM by CoffeeCat
As far as I'm concerned, Obama gets an "I" or an incomplete.

He gets this grade for two reasons: First, he's only been on the job for about a year. I'm giving
him some benefit of the doubt and understanding that he's still got three years in office remaining.

Secondly--in my opinion, our entire governmental apparatus is crumbling. He's either going to fix it
or he's not. That's what I would base my grade on. Yeah, yeah...social issues and saying nice things
in speeches are all well and good. However, do we have a working democracy? Does our government follow
the Constitution? Are we marching toward Fascism? Do the corporations bribe politicians, who then
craft the law of the land--based on what these corrupt corporation want? Do we have a government "by
the people, of the people and for the people"?

Those are the important questions. If we don't have those things--then it's an "I" and a total failure.

I won't be distracted by wedge issues, speeches, lip service or excuses. I won't be dazzled by a few
little scraps of meat thrown out to the Progressives--to placate me into moronic thinking like, "Well...that's
much better than what a Republican would do." Screw that. You can't be happy about a slight, practically
meaningless improvement in healthcare or some kind words said about the rights of gay people--if our entire
system of government has been hijacked by powerful corporations and a bloodthirsty war machine.

Fix our damn system. Without it, we have nothing.

44. I agree with the congress grade
His appointments, no matter how bad they are, were confirmed by the senate. No matter how many letters I wrote to my senators they still voted to confirm. They knew Geithner's record, they knew most of the rest of the cabinet were far from liberals.

And gates?

Some change.

74. The old..
... "they didn't stop me" argument. A load of bollocks when Bush used it and still a load of bollocks.

Congress by tradition defers to the president on appointments. The confirmation process is merely to weed out bad actors, not to pick good ones.

Obama is 100% responsible for the mess the country is in, he's done jack shit to fix anything and he deserves an F.

24. I gave him an A minus and would say he has not lived up to his promises
in some areas where he should and could have, mostly in the area of civil liberties across the spectrum (Patriot Act through to gay rights) but he gets an A nonetheless from me. So far. I continue to watch closely...

P.S. This is really an accurate "grade" since his grade has to be in contrast to what we have had/might have had more of if he hadn't been elected. So I have to add that proviso to my vote...

26. I am cconfused by your answer.
I heard you say

1. he has not lived up to his promises re: civil liberties across the spectrum
(Patriot Act through to gay rights).

2. You are basing his grade against what you would have given someone who is NOT being graded?
( "in contrast to what we have had/might have had more of if he hadn't been elected.")

Thus you give him an A for NOT living up to his promises and for not being someone else?

39. Sorry. My post was poorly written.
A minus SO FAR. I think the SO FAR is important. I want to see how this shakes out. The book is certainly not closed on gay rights. Far more difficult for me is the Patriot Act but again, I want to see his moves over the next year. That may change.

In a way, I am saying that he is not Bush and so I give him a grade based on a comparison. That is why a letter grade is not totally applicable here. Bush was utterly hopeless; I don't think Obama is. I am hopeful for Obama and I never was with Bush. I think Obama is aware of the pitfalls in Afghanistan where Bush was totally in the hands of criminals. I cannot and will not get into the "Obama is just the same as Bush" mindset that I hear some people say. I think we're better off with Obama and his flaws than we would be with another Republican in the White House. LOTS better off. We have a gifted man as president. It is worth it to me to support him where I can and oppose his policies when I think he is in error but still be overall supportive of him. Why? Because what is our choice otherwise?

Wait and see...

I get such a kick out of this aspect of DU. Same as with my "Intellectual Honesty" poll - the bell curve was centered around 15%, yet there was a whole bunch of votes for "90-100%" - which would be laughable if you didn't know the motivation of the trolls who do these sorts of things.

32. This should be broken out into categories - like a real report card
There are some areas that Obama has done very well in - things he's not really getting credit for, especially reversing policies Bush had put into effect in the areas of the environment, workers rights and so forth. I'd give him an A+ in those areas.

Then there are other areas that are maybe not so good. Or some where time will tell whether they're good or not.

Edited on Mon Dec-14-09 02:18 PM by jotsy
I'd grade him higher in some areas and not so much in others, here's how I guess I'd break it down

math
how else would one describe the economy without stumbling on the notion of fuzzy
gets points for understanding the material, but not executing any numerical remedy in a time prompt setting lowers overall grade. Consider it a C, which is ironically appropriate and fits right in with, capitalist, corporatist, corrupt, collude, criminal. I'll stop there but could go on. Disclaimer for any inflamed eyeballs. No I don't think Obama himself is any of those C words, what I contend is his skill level negotiating these problems needs developing.

english
this for me is about communication and while he's a pretty package as a message deliverer, I'm still waiting for something tangible to arrive. I need clarity and action, not diffusion and delays. Gots to go with a D here.

history
Failure to acknowledge our own role in how the tension level around the world got so high by continuing to let military contractors be the heart of our economy. That's for sure an F

social studies
The structure of our society is being dismantled as the staples of viability are being horded by the elite. I see his job here as someone to play referee and make sure rules are abided by. It's clear he's trying, but obtaining only average results. By definition, a C

science
Our environment is in dire need of a very expensive sponge bath and the folks who should pay for that have repeatedly insisted it just isn't necessary. As the guy with the authority to make them face some financial music his efforts here don't seem to compliment the gravity of the situation another C I suppose, but its a realllllly low one.

citizenship
A responsible citizen would understand how important the concepts of accountability and atonement are to a people where the rule of law is supposed to be the law of the land. Equal justice means no more or less consideration for the affluent and powerful than for those of meager means. By refusing to allow our justice system a chance to prosecute the last administration for the mess we'll be undoing for some time to come. Colossal failure here.

So I'll take those grades and divide by the number of them to get what it gets, which turns out to be a D

My offerings are entirely subjective and should be considered more of a preview to first term grades, which aren't supposed to come up until late next month.

I want everyone to know I voted for this man with the kind of hope it hurts to see dashed. He has yet to govern in the way I had envisioned, but I try to understand he has to lead all, not just progressives. In one of my very first responses to a thread about Obama and my expectations, I stated what I had really looked forward to was the return of my bill of rights, which is still not even a blip on the radar of discussion topics. I said then if I had a chance to speak with him that I would plead..."No frodo, you must let the precious go."

Apparently, no one close enough to be heard had him heed that particular warning.

When you consider Congress is effectively controlled by the GOP, the press thinks the teabaggers are the majority in America when they don't even rate as a decent minority, and he's attempting to fix every one of Bush's fuckups with no help whatsoever, I'd say he's doing decent.

That's just a convenient excuse for our excuse of congresscritters. All we've heard is excuses for the last 15 years.

Congress and the WH is controlled by corporate interests.

The only ones who don't have a seat at the table are the people.

48. Obama obviously is not experiencing what the average American is
experiencing. If he was, he would not give himself such a generous grade.

54. A solid "F" on education. His administration is a complete failure
on this issue, with its apparent pro-privatization bent.

55. D+
Only because his Presidency to this point has been such a major dissapointment.

Maybe I graded him so low because I had such high hopes for the man...

56. A+ (for being better then McCain) F+ (for being better then Clinton)
I would give Obama an A+ for changing the course America was on. We went from neo-con to neo-con~dlc. It is a huge improvement.
I would give Obama an F+ for being a better choice then Hillary Clinton. Shy of charisma, what has Obama brought that Hillary would not have? Pretty much the same game, imo.

66. A minus because he hasn't single-handedly cured cancer or given my daughter a Unicorn yet.

Other than that, I think he's done a splendid job.

Edit: clarity.

69. Yes, soldiers' survival, LGBT rights, bailouts to bankers... "all unicorns"
Obnoxious, upper class, selfish bullshit. Put your flesh where your mouth is: your daughter better be enlisting. We'll probably still be fighting Bush and Obama's wars when she's 18.

77. Quick! DU this Poll!
Oh wait... *sigh*

I can't bring myself to grade our President. If we were grading on a curve, and I think we kind of have to, then his own self assessment is about right, imo.

81. Looks like the DU average is a C (74.99 grade).
Using A+ 99, A- 92, B+ 89, B- 82, etc.

Seems fair enough considering his predecessor would have gotten a "0". Miles above but still far from being an A student.
