The Gay and Marriage Rights...
SO here I am in Mexico City. And listening to the news is kind of fascinating. Folks you think the marriage fight is just limited to the US? Nope.

The PRD has introduced a bill to extend full marriage rights to the LGBT community. Oh and like clockwork the PAN is coming out with the usual talking points.

Marriage is between a man and a woman.

They really don't create a family....

You know the drill.

Now 22% of people polled are all for it... so if you think the fight north of the border is tough, it is even toughter here. Oh and the usual breakdown occurs, the younger the person the more accepting they are of it.

Just a point of interest, how this is not just a fight limited to the US...

1. The Catholic church is still really powerful there isn't it?
I can imagine it will be nearly impossible to pass there.

2. It is strong but the separation of church and state is
much stronger than in the US because of Mexico's bloody history with the Church. And it is amazing. Under a very conservative Administration, and I have zero respect for Calderon, things like abortion rights are occurring. Also there is a program to end the Machismo and women's abuse.

So there is some progress in that sense.

3. I didn't know that!
Now my interest is peaked and I think I might just go grab a few books on Mexico's history. Thanks !

4. Concentrate on the Guerra de Reforma
in the 19th century... that is where a lot of that mess went down.

The Guerras Cristeras (after the Mexican Revolution of 1910) were the last big hurrah.

If you can get anything by Krauze (in English) he is the top historian right now.
