Projections Put Whites in Minority in U.S. by 2050

Without new immigrants, by the middle of the century the nation’s population would begin to decline, the elderly would account for nearly one in four Americans and non-Hispanic whites would remain a majority, according to new projections by the Census Bureau.

But if immigration were to merely slow down, rather than stop, non-Hispanic whites, who now account for nearly two-thirds of the population, would become a minority by 2050, according to the projections. If the pace of immigration increases, that benchmark could be reached as early as 2040.

Anyway, it's going to get harder and harder to tell just who's white, black, red, yellow, brown, periwinkle, lime green etc etc.

But, White Folks will still comprise the largest ethnic group by far. I mean, who the hell sees Asians, Hispanics, African Americans and Native Americans as some sort of monolithic group?

Of course, some of my in-laws don't consider Italians to be exactly white anyway and some of my Grandparents certainly didn't see Jews as white.

Vanessa Williams was asked how she felt being black living in Northern Westchester County NY (without a doubt the WHITEST place I've ever lived) and she replied that Green was the only color that mattered up there......

or change dramatically in terms of where the immigrants come from. It is hard to predict where, but it always does seem to change. For those of you who say "good" in response, you might want to consider hiding your bigotry a little more. The problem has never been whites or blacks, but those who identify who is white and black, and use identity to control politics. That won't change no matter how many "whites" there are. Thank God that the Census now recognizes "multiracial", it's a step in the right direction to hopefully destroying racial identities period. Unfortunately, whites becoming a smaller portion of the population may increase the number of whites who consider race to be their primary identity. Right now that is just limited to the Aryan Nation types.

And for all those who say that one day we will all just be "brown", it doesn't really make much sense considering that skin color is an evolutionary trait, one that didn't take long to "evolve" among humans. For one, immigration all across the world will probably slow down a lot due to such issues as overpopulation and global warming, and lack of energy resources in the future will make living locally quite popular again. So it is likely that skin colors will generally match the regions they have evolved to. In the US, you can look back at the native peoples and their skin color to get an idea of what color is best at absorbing Vitamen D while also fending off radiation in this environment. This is very long term of course, but it makes sense to me. It wasn't long ago that humans came out of Africa, and the diversity in skin color that evolved since then is a rather astounding testament to adaptability to a specific enivronment.

By 2050 we will probably be well into the worst effects of climate change.

By then, we'll be enjoying extreme weather events, crop failures, famines, mass migrations, wars, etc.

They don't take into account the effects of peak oil extraction which is right around the corner. The American Southwest is totally unsustainable, good luck pumping water and getting around in that mess past 2020. There is too much egalitarianism in this topic and shown by too many here on DU, they are going to be in for a big surprise once the future finally comes. I can assure you, there won't be immigration, there will be resource wars, and there won't be 8 billion people on the planet. You can not have infinite growth on a finite planet.

By the way, no one says the United States must exist in 2050 in any way similar to what it does today. The next 20 years will be nothing like the previous 20, the free ride is over. Ultimately the world is going to implode on itself far before 2050, I'd be willing to bet it'll be a replay of the 1920s in politics as well. I don't think the U.S. will swing left this time, the U.S. was an aberration.
