Robert Byrd's Death Seemingly Prayed For By Tom Coburn
"On Sunday afternoon, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) appeared to pray for Robert Byrd's death so that health care reform would not pass. Dana Milbank reports at the Washington Post:

"At 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon -- nine hours before the 1 a.m. vote that would effectively clinch the legislation's passage -- Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) went to the Senate floor to propose a prayer. "What the American people ought to pray is that somebody can't make the vote tonight," he said. "That's what they ought to pray."

"It was difficult to escape the conclusion that Coburn was referring to the 92-year-old, wheelchair-bound Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.V.) who has been in and out of hospitals and lay at home ailing. It would not be easy for Byrd to get out of bed in the wee hours with deep snow on the ground and ice on the roads -- but without his vote, Democrats wouldn't have the 60 they needed."

1. I detest COburn, but in all fairness, he probably meant Lieberman
(who had gone back to CT for sabbath on Friday)

5. I don't think he cared which one. All he wanted is his god's intervention
to kill someone, and stop this bill.

2. Oklahoma has two real winners in the Senate
One thinks we're in the 18th Century, and the other one thinks he's leading the Spanish Inquisition.

3. Hey, Coburn
You just screwed the pooch, karmically speaking. Wiccans will tell you that it's gonna come back and bite you in the ass too. In fact, Xians of the non-insane variety don't think much of petitioning their bronze-age deity to cause grievous harm to another human being.

4. Thanks...
I heard just a snippet of this on Morning 'Mike'(who seems to be getting more like Joe every day)and wasn't sure what was going on. Ahhh, nothing surprises me with them anymore.

8. Couldn't they have set up a bed for Byrd at the Capitol so he wouldn't have had to drive in?

12. And this person practices the profession of medicine?
The question to the minority party is "at long last
have you no shame?"

16. I wonder why he's in politics instead of practicing medicine, myself...
Obstetrics is a lucrative practice, especially if you don't get into the difficult pregnancy specialties, which it seems that Dr. Coburn isn't.
Side story that has something to do with my point -
The one time I went to a specialist OB/GYN for "older lady parts issues" - and by the way, it was overtly evangelical in his office - there was another lady there waiting to schedule an abortion (she was a little louder than she should have been with the receptionist).
Granted, it was due to severe problems and an non-viable pregnancy - which would tend to ease the "moral" quibble of most fundamentalists, but from what I've heard about Tom Coburn, that wouldn't be reason enough for his "God" to allow him to agree to ease the poor woman from her pain.
However, I have a feeling that Coburn's "God" - which he has decided to serve above his medical oath, not to mention the oath he took to serve the Constitution of the United States - would want her to suffer for the sinful act that caused her to get pregnant in the first place. He's spoken a lot of fancy talk about morals and ethics and values for the good of Society, Tom has, but his actions tend to speak differently. Tom's actions speak only to the values that are good for him and his fellow travelers in "faith".
