Lieberman: Yemen will be 'tomorrow's war' if preemptive action not taken
12/27/09 09:53 AM ET

Sen. Joe Lieberman Sunday said that Yemen could be the ground of America's next overseas war if Washington does not take preemptive action to root out al-Qaeda interests there.

Lieberman, who helms the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said on "Fox News Sunday" that the U.S. will have to take an active approach in Yemen after multiple recent terrorist attacks on the U.S. were linked back to the Middle Eastern nation.

The Connecticut senator said that an administration official told him that "Iraq was yesterday's war, Afghanistan is today's war. If we don't act preemptively, Yemen will be tomorrow's war."

Lieberman said that Yemen needs to be a focal point because two recent attacks were linked back to a growing al-Qaeda presence there.

3. Attack them now before we attack them later?
Edited on Sun Dec-27-09 10:46 AM by rucky
Creative variation of "fight 'em there so we don't have to fight 'em here"

or more like: "Shall we shag now, or shall we shag later?"

9. Yes. Plenty of them...outside the M.E.

None in Central/S.A., Europe, former S.Union, Pacific nations (for right now, but those that w/majority Muslims better watch out).

It's curious which ones he DOES want to invade. Makes you wonder how he (or whoever) chooses which ones should be invaded.

11. It's a damned good thing that all the countries we threaten don't preemptively attack us.
Not only that we've threatened but actually attacked.

18. Well, we must be proactive after all...
...you see, the Military Industrial Complex must be fed, so we must be constantly on the lookout for the next likely vic... er, targ... er, enemy we can dredge up so we can justify the blood and money that must be spent -- Must Be Spent -- to maintain empire. Even if the place has no resources to speak of, we must let the world know that we are not to be trifled with. Hell, we must let the world know that we will step in and squash anyone, anywhere, anytime we choose, merely because we can.

It doesn't matter if we win or lose in the long run, because the MIC profits regardless; all that matters is that the endless war continues to be waged, and the weapons continue to be produced, and new ones developed, and old "obsolete" ones continue to be sold to pretty much anyone around the world who can cough up the money. Because that feeds the war machine, and we must feed the war machine, don't you see, it's just the way things are, and more to the point, it's the way we want things to be.

Good ol' Joe is just looking out for the best interests of the MIC, same as it ever was.

22. So Lieberman is saying someone in the Obama administration told him that?
Would that be a correct interpretation?

"The Connecticut senator said that an administration official told him that "Iraq was yesterday's war, Afghanistan is today's war. If we don't act preemptively, Yemen will be tomorrow's war." "

and he then goes on FOX to proclaim this to one and all...

26. Seems he did say that. And it may well be true.
Remember last proclamation he made on Fox was that he wouldn't support the Medicare expansion. That night Rahm was busting Harry Reid's chops to cave to Lieberman. Wanna bet he gets his war? Wanna speculate as to whether the administration puts him up to this crap?

I'm surprised that I was first to nominate this. It's particularly important, in the contewxt of the neoconservative access to power in the country today.

33. Well.....part of this is true. Al-Queda needs to be destroyed everywhere, but "Yemen" is not the
enemy. It's a country.

It's irresponsible for him to refer to "Yemen" as if it's a terrorist training ground or organization, when it's a soverign country just like all the others that we've taken over.

What we need to do is to use our high sophistication electronics equiptment to kill Al-Queda people in Yemen without killing innocent civilians and pretending that we're taking over the country and stuff.
