2. McCain is always pissed off
So naturally there should be steam (or smoke) coming out of his hears, at least cartoon style....

7. Or an allusion to the Forrestal Fire

The boat burned, but it started with Johnny's plane...

On edit: at least that's the first thing I thought of. He *is* spectacularly grouchy, though.

8. In all fairness, the fire started because of a faulty circuit on another
aircraft. Even your link uses 'either' when describing the plane where the fire actually started.

9. Actually it started with the plane parked across the deck from
McCain's plane. A defective missile fired spontaneously and ruptured the external tanks on McCain's plane starting the fire.

Not that I'm defending him but he is, after all, a Jet Ace having downed five airplanes. Too bad they all belonged to the US Navy . . .

10. I wholeheartedly concede the point - those are, after all, the historical facts
Plus he was absolved of any wrongdoing, although a documentary I saw on Discovery Civilization very strongly implied that McCain may have been screwing around and accidentally shot the missile; there was some confusion as to which plane was his. This turned out not to be the case, as the investigation reported, and I'm satisfied with that. It's just the juxtaposition of "plane", "fire", and "McCain" that makes me think of the incident.

11. Again, in all fairness, McCain did not "down" five aircraft. Factcheck has
an interesting article.

<snip> McCain did lose two Navy aircraft while piloting them. One crash was found to be be McCain's fault, the other due to an engine failure of undetermined cause.. A third was destroyed on the deck of the carrier USS Forrestal when a missile fired accidentally from another plane hit either the plane next to McCain's or, less likely, his own aircraft, triggering a disastrous fire that killed 134 sailors and nearly killed McCain. A fourth plane was lost when he was shot down over North Vietnam on a bombing mission over Hanoi.

A fifth alleged "crash" turns out to be a misinterpretation of a flight accident that did not result in the loss of the aircraft. McCain admitted to causing that incident through "daredevil clowning" but returned safely. <more at link>
