152,000 plus DUers now. How many when you joined? |
|
I joined 9/11/05 and I think there were about 70,000 at that point. I wonder if Skinner has our number?

62. The first few hundred numbers got boggled up at one point in 2001 when there was |
|
a server malfunction. When they rebooted, those numbers got re-assigned sort of at random -- I think maybe as people started posting after the re-boot. So, your join number was no doubt different, but you may have been the 37th DUer who posted after the crash.

...That's the first time anyone's ever explained that in one of these threads. Mostly people ooh and aah and ask me how things were in the Stone Age of DU. :D
So that still implies I'm in the first few hundred, which again amazes me. But my memory's not what it once was. :hi:

you definitely were a member in the first 5-6 months of DU's existance. I don't know for sure how many numbers were involved in the great re-shuffling, but I'm pretty sure it was less that 2,000. Someone from back in the day did a post about it once, but I can't remember the exact number that person claimed was involved -- just that it wasn't very high.
Or maybe I was high, or they were high, or...

You see, there are some people out there who like to give only half the information it takes to find something so they can sit all smug and superior because they have the rest of the information and you don't.
It's a child's game.
If you want to find your member number, look at the last number in the URL at the top of the page and delete that first one. That's your number.

|
to the right after he became senator was because he was from a "red" state (mine - and he had twice been elected as gov. before senator as a center moderate - and I always argued that the lurch past center right was intended for national, not state, election ambitions). Oh, and he kept insisting on calling Hoosiers, "Indianans" (as a hoosier I can tell you there is no such recognized term.) Ah the memories....
As aggravating as he could be, I also had a soft spot for him. I wonder how he is doing (and hope it is well.)

6. I'm member #106679, so there were 6,679 members when I signed up in the fall of 2001. |
|
Edited on Sun Jan-10-10 02:41 PM by scarletwoman
Everyone can read people's member numbers by passing their cursor over either the pm or the profile icon at the top of someone's post and reading the ID# that shows in the address bar at the bottom of your screen. Subtract 100,000 from that number and that's the member number.
Your member# is 1767898, which means there were exactly 76,897 members up to the point at which you signed up.
Having researched this awhile back (when I had a lot of time on my hands, obviously) I can tell you that at the beginning of 2002 there were exactly 8,208 members, and at the beginning of 2003 there were exactly 20,010 members.
From July of 2003 on, you can see people's "joined date" in their profile and thus infer the number of DU members on that date by their member number.

I should have added that some of the very earliest member numbers from 2001 got all mixed up and out of order at one point, when the Admins had a major server malfunction. But from 2002 on, I'm pretty sure the member numbers are accurate.

We were all watching the number at the top of the page as it got closer, wondering how long it would take. It was much easier to "know" most of the active posters in those days, we were pretty close-knit. It was a wonderful time to be here. :)

there was a cyber-vandal attack that screwed with the numbers and erased a few of the most recent members (may not have erased their accounts, but erased their count in the number of members.)
Apparently there were under 8300 when I arrived in the first couple of days of Jan 2002.

83. Oh jeeze, I'm gettin' too old to remember all the details anymore. |
|
I only remember the 10,000 milestone -- and that as soon as that passed, we started getting excited about how much higher it might go. So maybe 11,000 was greeted as another big deal, it could very well have been.
I remember my impression, later on, that the membership started increasing exponentially. I remember reaching a point where I was feeling rather sad and nostalgic about the early days when there were way fewer people posting here and we all kind of "knew" each other pretty well. And I remember the 2002 midterms after Wellstone died and I could barely stand to post anymore after that smarmy weasel Coleman got elected.
As I posted above, the first member number of 2002 was 8208, so your arrival date of Jan. 2002 definitely coincides. I remember you well, you showed up like a great brightly flaming torch and I always looked forward to your posts.

40. It's a COOL number! I didn't find out about the number thing until someone pointed it out a couple |
|
of years ago or so. Ever since, I'm always looking at people's member numbers just for the hell of it.
I spent way too many hours one day about a year and a half ago figuring out how to calculate the member numbers for the "lost" years prior to July 2003, and got the numbers narrowed down to the start of 2002 (first member# of 2002 was 8,208) and 2003 (first member# of 2003 was 20,010).
I wrote them down in a notebook that I keep next to my computer so I could proudly trot out my research results in threads such as these. :D

48. #7884 here... Some things I miss about the old days: |
|
newyawker99 welcoming everyone and cheering people's posting milestones... She made this such a wonderful place to hang around
Khephra's news items & his gentle good humor
those 'daily' threads in the Lounge...

I spoke to a common pal today, and I can safely say that Buddhamama passes on all good greetings. :hi:
We were just speaking about you (in a good way, of course) a few weeks ago. :)

89. How so very cool (and touching!) |
|
please send her my best. What a fantastic lady.
I am so warmed by that comment. Work (which is great - but all consuming) eats up so much time (and has for the past half-decade) that I barely post. I assume I am rather forgotten (out of sight and all of that). You are not out of sight for me - as I still read daily (just very quickly and with little time to post.) How great to be remembered by the both of you of whom I think of so warmly. Thanks for giving me a bright spot for the evening!

93. She is a special lady, no doubt. I've never met anyone like her. |

Trust me, you aren't forgotten. A lot of posers come and go, but a few people stand out amidst them all along. You're one of them. Neither of us forgets you!
And I will be sure to pass on all greetings. :)

I figure since this thread is all old-timers, someone who got here after 100,000 should chime in for us newbies. Sometimes we hear so much about the good old days on DU, it almost seems like we were all here. :)

When you're on your profile page, look at the URL up top. The end of the URL is =user_profiles&u_id=107691 -- subtract 100,000 and 7691 is your member number.
