2. You're missing something. I deal with a community bank.
They are very customer friendly and WANT me as a customer, unlike the BIG BOYS who only want the big buck customers!!! I've been dealing with that same community bank for 10 years and am never disappointed!

3. Other: no such thing as a credit union here. No, wait, I was wrong!
Edited on Sun Jan-10-10 07:08 PM by Commie Pinko Dirtbag
There's even a credit union geared to IT workers in Rio de Janeiro!

Gotta look into it.

5. Wells Fargo....
I've been happy with them so far and the customer service is great but I never really thought about the downfalls of banking with them.

14. We bank at WF, because I travel a great deal and need fee-free ATM
withdrawals, wherever I happen to be. We also have accounts at the credit union.

6. I picked option one ...
I moved my money from Chase to a credit union and I am much happier. They treat me well and value my business. Chase took over my original bank. I would never have gone to them. They are crooked and unethical and want to put a meter around your neck so that they can charge for the air you breathe.

If you have any choice at all stay away from Chase and other big banking chains. You're much better off in a credit union or a much smaller bank where you are a human being to them and not a cypher.

7. I've heard a lot about Chase. I get a "move your checking to us and we'll give you $100!" flyer
every month from them.

I almost want to take their $100 and bolt, it didn't say anything about not being allowed to leave, but knowing banks, they're lying.

Chase bought Bank One, which I used to have, and they were a crappy bank too. Huge penalties. Big banks just suck, anyone still with them has been fortunate not to have found that out just yet. I have been given two overdrafts back by my Credit Union, I would have had to PULL TEETH to get even one from Bank One.

12. A typical Chase action ...
They have made up a rule for themselves which would have been illegal in a prior more consumer friendly time. They call it the "rule of impound."

We had a savings account and a checking account. When my husband was hospitalized last year we had to pull what we had in savings out to keep going. When the balance got below about $5000, Chase began charging us $7.00 per month without warning. We found this out the first month that they did it. They took the last few dollars from our checking account creating about five $33 dollar overdrafts and stuck it in the savings account. When we began getting the overdrafts in the mail we were bewildered and called them. They said they had exercised their right of impound and it was in the literature they had sent us. I looked and it wasn't. They would not return the overdrafts even though we had no part in causing them unless you count being levied bank charges you were not expecting as doing something.

We promptly closed the savings account and told them we were exercising our right of impound. Then we paid off the overdrafts and moved our direct deposits to the credit union which took about two months for all the transfers. I have never been so glad to be out of anyplace in my life. They would rip out your fingernails if you tried to take $100 from them without opening an account and they would do worse if you did open an account.

Please, be good to yourself and stay with your credit union. We all need to let banks like Chase seek their own level. The one under pond scum.

18. wow! simply horrible! good for you for saying bye bye to the scum bankers! I will not take the $100
from them as I had thought, thanks, you make me realize what might they do with my info, records, etc. Not worth canceling the account after getting the $100.

They're doing the $100 because so many are closing their accounts - thank GOD! I hope more help kill the national banks!

9. Credit Union, but not for the reason you put
My parents used this credit union, so after I got my first job my mom took me down to open my account there. It was connected to the company my dad worked for (then my mom got a job there, and now I have a job there too).

I am currently refinancing my house from Everhome Mortgage to the credit union. I strongly suggest people NOT use Everhome Mortgage. They put erroneous information causing my credit score to drop dramatically. I got the information removed and my credit score has reset, but it still fucked me over when I went to purchase a new vehicle. (I've now refinanced the new car with my credit union as well, dropping my payment $80 and cut my interest rate in half).

10. I didn't vote...
...because I bank with Chase. They are located in my office building. The staff is always extremely polite and helpful. I've got access to their ATMs just about everywhere I travel. There online services are great. So far, they've done everything right to earn my business.

I'd love to see the rules changed at the national level to get rid of the "too big to fail" nonsense. There is a lot wrong with our banking system. That said, I'm not going to significantly increase my costs or hassles for a protest that will accomplish nothing.

11. Wells Fargo
I've always been treated respectfully by them. Several years ago ago I left my card in an ATM after making a deposit -- the next guy promptly withdrew $300 and threw my card in the trash. WF immediately returned the $300, killed my card, issued a new one, and contacted the police about the fellow who withdrew from my account.

All this on a weekend, mind you.

16. I left the card in the machine.
I got distracted by a conversation with a date and didn't close out the transaction -- on some machines it gives you the receipt for your deposit then asks if you would like to do another transaction. Dipshit that I am I just grabbed the receipt and walked away rather than closing out the activity and getting my card. Dude behind me just hit YES and WITHDRAWAL.

Entirely my fault, unfortunately.

17. Dayum. That sucks, but I'm glad WF was cool about it.
I don't have the warm fuzzies for them, but I have had no problems banking with them the past six or seven years.

We would get hit with some nonsense fees from time to time, and--being that we're in a small town--my wife could just call the branch manager and he would get them reversed with no hassles. I don't know if everyone gets that, even in the big cities, but we haven't had any complaints.

13. Credit Union for the last 15 years
because they're small, they recognize me when I go in, they have always treated me well, their fees are less than national bank chains, they are owned by their members instead of shareholders, their interest is in serving their members not in making profits for shareholders, with the Credit Union Service Center network they are almost as conveniet as national chains, and because it's just something that I feel good about.

19. The bank I use was a small regional one when I went to them back in 1988
But they have now grown to a large regional (SunTrust). But since I keep a minimal amount of money in my checking account, it really does not matter other than the convenience of having easier access than I would through the credit unions I can join.

I was a member of a credit union at a job I used to have and at one that is for students and employees where I went to college. But then they had no branch offices and access was a pain so I moved my accounts.

My hubby's paycheck and my monthly "payment" are electronically deposited in our checking account and it is what I use for paying bills and routine expenses. All other money, savings and investments are elsewhere, so I don't feel it is worth it to move my account.

20. a local credit union
great service when local, low or nonexistant fees when dealing (in whatever form that takes) with their stuff through out-of-area banks or affiliated CUs. fine enough as financial institutions go (read: 'scum of the earth at best').
