Help the poor even though I'm a troll? |
|
New tax withholding on the working poor. Those making $116 a week started getting $11 less a week this month. No one is holding the government accountable. Yes, I'm a troll, but I still care about the poor.

The same issues that we faced when this went into effect are still hurting those low wage workers.
This should have been a multi year program.

There is an argument to make it permenent but without taxes we would not be a civilized society.. Roll back some of the Bush* tax cuts for the wealthy and I am certain you will hear them squeeling..

There was incredible support for Healthcare Reform, Cap and Trade, but there is almost no interest in a simple rollback on withholding on the working poor? If such a bill were introduced wouldn't it just sail through congress?

30. The tax cut was not just for the poor. It was a part of the American Recovery Act (Stimulus bill) |
|
It was only there for the year 2009. It was designed to add a few more dollars to everyone's check while the economy was in freefall. Now that a recovery of sorts is in effect it has expired. If there appears a need to reintroduce it. I am sure they could easily do so..What would really spur growth is for the Huge Bush* tax cuts for the ultra wealthy to expire.

33. I understand the tax cut was temporary... |
|
but given the current economy, why can't the entry level be permanent? Regards of how it happened, the very poor's taxes went up. All I'm asking is for taxes to start at $138 a week, like they did in 2009. Its simple, and would help those who need it most.

Not very exciting. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/n1036.pdf But last year it was at $138. I shudder to think if there were life and death decisions made this month, for lack of $11. To a person making $116 a week, $11 is pure gold. TY

according to my calculations a single person making less than $179.80 per week pays zero takes. Because the standard deduction is $5,700 and the personal exemption is $3,650. Not only that, but because of the Obama tax credit of $400, a sinlge person must make more than another $76.92 a week before they owe any taxes. Yet the IRS is gonna with-hold $6.38 per week?
And somebody making $255 a week will have $16.65 taken out of their weekly check even though they will owe no taxes at the end of the year. That's a total of $865.8 taken out over the year.
But you are wrong on a couple of counts. First, it is not a tax increase, because it does not change the amount of taxes OWED, it only changes the amount with-held. Second it is not $11 for somebody making $116 a week. It is 10% of the amount OVER $116 a week.
Still, it does seem to unfairly and unnecessarily pinch people who may already be having trouble making ends meet.

There are some left-wing trolls here, right-wing trolls...I even own up to certain definitions of it myself (I am a very loyal Democrat but I admit that I use tricks and social engineering to make points, usually against people who attack the Democratic Party from the left). 52. aha - it appears that I made a mistake in my last post too |
|
It is not $116 a week that is the thresh-hold. It is $116 a week + the with-holding allowance which is $70.19. Meaning that a person making $186 a week has zero tax with-held from their paycheck. Which makes much more sense. If this number was reduced from $138 to $116 like you say, then the low income worker making $208.19 per week is only gonna have their with-holding increased by $2.20 per week (10% of (208.19-186)).
Still a pinch, but probably not gonna be life or death.
