1. My feelings haven't changed.
I still think he gives a hell of a speech, and I'm still unsure whether it will accomplish anything.

At least we have a potus that can speak above a third grade level. Other than that, still waiting to see more than just the dog and pony show.

2. Hmm... good early result of the poll
When it's neck in neck between "I'm still pissed" and "I'm less pissed", I'm always "less", just like a cold war trusts and then verifies...

5. It was just a speech. If all it takes is a speech then no one should feel any
different than they felt after the inauguration. It should be like the last year didn't happen at all.

7. Terrific. So let the fighting continue! Ugh. You're right, the speech
shouldn't make a difference, but the words he hasn't uttered previously might. Or not, on DU.

6. It might be kind of fun to sneak a peek at Mitt Romney's journal tonight.
Edited on Thu Jan-28-10 12:13 AM by saltpoint
Even if he can win the Pukes' nom he would still have to stand on a debate stage against Barack Obama, who is, as he demonstrated very convincingly tonight, no fool.

And you, Sarah Palin -- what job was it you were applying for?

13. 'Mandation' ! LOL.
Evidently GOP insider info favors brainless language-mangling fools.

Hence the Dubya nom and Palin's rising star.

Good god these people suck, don't they.

Get health Care done and done right. If he'd have fought for Public Option like he's fighting for Bernanke, we'd be a lot farther ahead. Stop caving on Cap-n-Trade. Get to work on jobs real jobs. The Stimulus was a start, but focused too much on tax cuts. Snap out of it on the ecomony too. Get rid of Bernanke, Geithner and Summers. Killing the Bush tax cuts would be good too.

34. Agree 100%.
One addition. They did cap-n-trade in this state and it is not a good thing. And cut military spending with an axe. Pull everyone out of the mideast, cut the military budget in half and a lot of our financial woes would dissipate.

18. No change- he behaved precisely as he has the entire year
conciliatory, not wanting "to punish the banks" and stating that the corporations abusing Americans are in essence good people- and still dreaming his naive dreams of bipartisanship with those who hate every fibre of his being, and will stop at nothing drag he and the Democrats- not to mention the rest of the nation down.

38. Whatever- the starry eyed groupie thing is understandable after the SOTU
Edited on Thu Jan-28-10 03:41 AM by depakid
I'm simply applying objective analysis to the speech, based on the communications principles set out by Lakoff, Westen and many others. Just as I posted yesterday in "what to look for."

Lots of people loved the health care speech at first, too- but it also failed over time for the same reasons. Bottom line is that you're not going to get anywhere with this conciliatory rhetoric- and with the type of conciliatory follow up we're likely to see.

Some people never learn- and, unfortunately, some people are incapable of changing their stripes to suit the needs of the times. Yep- just keep on saying what good people those banksters are- how they don't need to be punished or held accountable, just like the health insurers.

See how many people rally round come November.

If I were a Republican strategist - a distinct species from their stooge politicians, I'd be quite pleased right about now- if not relieved that he largely missed a big opportunity

35. He gave a good speech, but words are so very cheap, and he needs to enact his programs.
Getting his programs through a corrupt Congress is the key. If he can do that, he'd have a lot more to talk about under accomplishments on his next SOTU Address.

37. No change ...
He made wonderful speeches during his campaign too, but you saw where that went. Freezing spending is not the way to close a deficit. Increasing revenue or having the government create jobs is. There was nothing new, nothing different. Same old stuff. He is a good speaker. That is how he came to everyone's attention to begin with.

Also, he lies. Why would that change now?
