12-Year-Old Girl Locked in Closet For a Year Because She Wanted to Eat, Say Texas Police

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (CBS/AP) Alfredo and Leticia Ines locked their 12-year-old daughter in a closet for nearly a year with no light and minimal contact with the world, according to Texas police.

The girl was released to go to school, eat or use the bathroom in the family's small home, officials said. She would do her homework by a thin sliver of light shining beneath the closet door.

One of her three brothers came to her rescue by alerting school officials. Her mother, Leticia Ines, told police she was trying to keep the 12-year-old from stealing food from the refrigerator.

2. I say lock both of them in a box for the rest of, well maybe 3/4 of their lives.
That is if the facts are as stated.

8. Well, the good news is once the other inmates find out what these two are in for, they're both dead.
There isn't a violin small enough or a song sad enough to be played for either of them. :nopity:

12. Whenever I hear about some horrible criminal act committed against a child,
I always take comfort in the fact that many of the people behind bars have children of their own, and don't take kindly to monsters who abuse little kids. The system has a way of taking care of these offenders...

18. That's whats odd...
I spent 45 days once locked up with some of the worst fathers around, but let an accused or guilty child abuser in and the other inmates let 'em have it. The guy accused of killing his infant son had to be rescued and carried out by the guards one night. I think they stuck him in the common cell on purpose.

9. This reminds me of a similar story from our area in N NV: Children locked in bathroom for five years
CARSON CITY - A tiny girl found pushing a shopping cart Thursday
afternoon told a horrifying story to deputies that resulted in the
arrest of her mother, grandmother and mother's boyfriend, officials
said.

According to officials, Regina Rios, 33, Tomas Granados, 33 and Esther
Rios, 56, kept the malnourished 16-year-old girl and her 10-year-old
brother locked and starving in a bathroom at 1404 Como St., No. 2.
Investigators believe the children had been kept in there for years.

Granados and the Rios women were booked into the Carson City Jail on
suspicion of child neglect and false imprisonment.

Sgt. Bob White of the Carson City Sheriff's Department said deputies
responded to a report of an unsupervised 8-year-old pushing a shopping
cart near East Second and Harbin streets at 1:52 p.m. When officers
found the 41-pound, 4-foot-tall girl, she said she'd just escaped from
the bathroom in which she and her little brother were kept.

"She said when her grandmother opened the door, she pushed her inside
and locked the deadbolt," White said. The girl had filled the cart with
food from the house and was trying to run away, he said ...
