Man, irate with "pay-first" gas policy, crashes SUV into the service station.

Mayes

A Jefferson County man is charged with attempted murder after authorities say the man, irate because a gas pump wasn't turned on, threatened to kill the service station clerk and then drove his truck into the store.

Roger Mayes, 49, pulled into the BP service station on Alabama 75 in Pinson about 6:45 a.m. Sunday. Moments later, he stormed into the store and told the clerk, "You are going to die and go to Hell," said the Jefferson County Chief Deputy handling the arrest. The service station has a pay first policy. Mayes had not paid first, so therefore the pump had not been turned on.

Mayes then went back to his 2001 Ford Explorer, drove away from the pump and pulled up toward the building. He revved his engine and then, at a high rate of speed, drove through the plate glass window and into the cashier counter and the coffee counter.

"If the clerk had not jumped out the way, he would have run over the clerk," the Deputy said.

10. Asshole-ishness has reached epidemic proportions......

..... The inevitable result of years of the corporate-manufactured "I want mine and I want it now" ethos and the erosion of a sense of collectiveness.

11. There are still Pump First stations?
I don't think I've seen one of those in 20-odd years. Didn't even realize they still existed.

13. Interesting. Must be a regional thing.
Of course, I also can't recall the last time I actually spoke with a station attendant either. It's usually: Pull in, stick the CC into the pump, fill the tank, and leave.

14. I can't stand pay first pumps.
In Wisconsin, there is usually a mixture of pay first and pump first with only little signs differentiating them. There are also pump first that change to pay first after a certain hour.

So, I understand his rage. I don't condone his actions, but, yeah, I understand his rage.
