Poll question: Your Heartfelt Prediction about the Future of Health Care Reform |
|
Conceding that we face a whole host of dire issues, if you are anything like me, Health Care Reform has been one of the--if not THE--pre-eminent issues on your mind these past six months or longer. Speaking for myself, I watched every session of the Senate Finance Committee mark-up, and those I was not able to watch live I caught on the weekend thanks to the C-Span archive. Even if you are not like me but care deeply about the passage of health care reform (HCR) I want to hear your gut feelings about whether we can accomplish this or not.
Admitting that opinions vary on where HCR stands right now, I have to confess I stayed up all night to watch the House and finally the Senate pass bills. I wanted a public option--or better yet Universal HC, Single Payer. To me that is the ideal. Nevertheless, having watched this fight for so many months, I was deeply emotional when these bills passed the House and Senate.
But now obviously things have been thrown into chaos once again, after thousands of hours of hearings. It is so frustrating.
I want to know what you all think of this situation as it now stands.
Do you think we will get HCR this year and, if so, of what quality?
Appreciation in advance to all of those who participate.

2. I had a very hard time choosing between options 1 and 2 |
|
I think it will pass -- and although I can say there are a number of things that are really disappointing to me--I finally had to go with #1, since in the end, I guess it would be satisfactory in comparison to absolutely nothing. I'm trying to see the glass half full version of progress.

Whatever we might get during this President's term will not constitute meaningful healthcare reform that will positively impact my life. I haven't seen a doctor for any reason in nearly 15 years and fully expect to live a life that is unnecessarily diminished and shortened because of my lack of meaningful access to healthcare. My circumstances are such that I cannot wait several more decades for the issue to be reconsidered.
Meaningful healthcare reform is my line in the sand. There are several incumbents (of both major political parties) who will not be receiving my vote to retain their position simply because of their efforts (or lack therof) with respect to meaningful healthcare reform. Fuck 'em.
Apparently having a sitting Dem President and majorities in both the House and Senate ain't what it's cracked up to be. There are only a few explanations as to why these fuckers haven't enacted meaningful helathcare reform: (1) they lack a principled comittment to doing so; (2) they lack the political skill and leadership to do so; (3) they lack the personal courage to do so; and/or (4) they have made a deal with the corporate interests that finance their election efforts. None of these things recommend they retain their position and office. Granted, there are some notable exceptions.

7. Fear is what drives many things in this country. |
|
The fear of Y2K was spread and IT consultants made a bundle, along with those selling portable generators and survivalist gear. When we fear crime new prisons and jails are built. When we fear terrorism the closed purse strings suddenly open and blank checks are written. I do not know what kind of fear will drive this country to do the right thing and join the rest of the civilized world with regard to healthcare.
