Darth Vader Actor David Prowse Beats Cancer
Darth Vader Actor David Prowse Beats Cancer

David Prowse, the British actor who physically played Darth Vader in the original three 'Star Wars' films, has announced he's made a full recovery from prostate cancer.

The former bodybuilder told the Daily Mirror newspaper that after a year of intensive radiotherapy, his cancer is in remission. "I've won the fight and I'm feeling better than ever. Everyone was shocked by how well it all went," he told the tabloid on Tuesday.

He was diagnosed early, but only after a Prostate Cancer Support Association worker urged him to get tested.

The actor's brother also beat the disease, and he advises all men over 50 to get tested. His efforts are paying off, saying "I've had people saying I've saved their lives."

2. I guess it's a good thing he wasn't an American, without health insurance!
I'm sure that access to treatment was a big damn help!

(And glad to hear Darth's okay!)

5. Funny thing; David Prowse and I went head to head with a Freeper over the NHS
vs. the American system years ago. We were all having lunch together and David mentioned having to wait for a knee surgery in London. The Freeper went off about how horrible England's socialized medicine was (she had never been been there, as I discovered after pressing her) and David, who has lived in both Countries, shot her down and made an excellent case for the UK system that ended with her just muttering dittohead talking points to herself. It was a thing of beauty!

When you hear him say to Preincess Leia "you are part of the rebel alliance" in a good West Country accent, it's hard not to add 'my lover' on to the end of it.

And the immortal 'Green Cross Code Man' public information ads, to teach children road safety: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgZIEFUT56k

At least you get to see Prowse in that one, although they've still dubbed over his voice (for a more 'Received Pronunciation' one - Francis Matthews, the voice of 'Captain Scarlett', perhaps?)
