RNC Chairman Steele: After taxes, $1 million ‘is not a lot of money’

In a nation where median household income hovers just above $50,000 a year and jobless claims are soaring, one would think the political and financial elite might be mindful of stepping on the little guy when they're speaking in public.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele? Not so much.

At a recent debate with possible Democratic Senate candidate Harold Ford, Jr., Steele boasted that after taxes, $1 million "is not a lot of money," apparently trying to leverage a rhetorical attack against President Obama's tax policies.

President Obama has said he wants the Bush-era tax cuts on wealthy Americans to expire, returning tax rates to Clinton-era levels and shifting more of the burden from poor families to those earning over $250,000 per year.

"Trust me, after taxes, a million dollars is not a lot of money," Steele said, according to the Associated Press.

Ford reportedly retorted, "Who in here makes a million dollars a year?" No hands were raised, to which Steele asked, "How many of you want to make a million dollars a year?"

7. Oh, good. Then they can increase funding for TANF, Food Stamps, and WIC
by a million each. After all--it's not a lot of money.

8. For Those Who Consider Themselves Rich, It Isn't...
I deal with people who have substantial assets...translation, they're rich. One time I was chatting with one such person and joked about how "a million doesn't go as far as it used to"...and the acquaintance said "damn right...today you're not really rich until you have $10 million".

If you have #1 million...and don't we all wish...with today's low interest rates, it averages out to about 60gs a year in interest...plenty of money for many of us to live on, but when you're used to "the finer things", then it's not that much.

It's all persepctive.

9. These people are desperately out of touch.
It's insulting, and more, amazing that so many serfs prop up these elitist, money grubbing fucks.

10. The Palinization of the GOP's "base" continues...
...I've posted a few news items and videos in the last couple of days about the "for profit" Tea Party "convention." The media keeps trying to get some traction on the fact that the sheep are lining up for tickets to this thing, and the money isn;t going to any "cause"...it's going directly into the pockets of the organizers and participants. Palin has been buying copies of her own book with money from her PAC...the list goes on and on.

But we're talking about people who will sit in the cold and wet weather, overnight, in line at the local Barnes & Noble or Borders store, to have "Sarah Barracuda" autograph a book that she didn't even WRITE.

As long as people like Limbaugh and Hannity can flog the airwaves daily with stories of the "liberal destruction of America," Steele & the Million Dollar Club can just keep stuffing the coffers. It's the perfect scam...Bush & Cheney spent eight years picking America's pockets, and within minutes of Obama's taking the oath of office, it was "look what Obama has done to our economy." And the "right wing talk radio" listeners gobble that stuff up like M&Ms.

11. Wow. How pathetically out of touch with the average "Joe" can one be?
Is there video? It would make a great campaign ad in the next year.
