Ollie North On What Happens If Gays Are Allowed To Serve Openly: ‘NAMBLA Members’ Are Next

Last night, Oliver North, the retired U.S. Marine Corps officer-turned-Fox News contributor, appeared on Hannity’s America to condemn the administration’s decision to overturn “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” North characterized Obama’s support for the repeal as a “stunning assault on the all-volunteer military, the very best in the world” and suggested that allowing gay and lesbian soldiers to serve openly was the tantamount to letting pedophiles into the military:

Stunning assault on the all-volunteer military, the very best in the world. Barack Obama now intents to treat them like lab rats in a radical social experiment, and it can be very, very detrimental. … In other words, this isn’t about rights. This isn’t about fairness. It’s all about national security. And apparently, Mr. Obama has forgotten it. … Now, here’s what’s next. NAMBLA members, same-sex marriages. Are chaplains in the U.S. military going to be required to perform those kinds of rituals? Do they get government housing?

The irony of a convicted felon who lied about diverting proceeds from arms sales to a rebel group in Nicaragua supporting a policy that forces gay and lesbian servicemen to lie about their sexual orientation was lost on both Hannity and North. The pair also failed to mention that Joint Chief of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen personally supports the policy’s repeal, which would have forced North to condemn him for treating the troops “like lab rats in a radical social experiment.”

I'm serious. I don't think the damn thing exists as anything other than a convenient prop for the Right to use when they need a bogeyman. EVERY gay rights organization is against them. All straight people are against them. They have no support whatsoever and their entire existence is predicated upon the notion that committing one of the most heinous crimes out there--boy-bumping--should be seen as a normal thing.

Now...on the other hand...if a handful of exceptionally homophobic Republicans were to get together and think, "what can we possibly do to hurt the gay cause?" they might invent a "group" whose stated purpose is the promotion of pederasty, and then do as much as they possibly could to advertise its existence. Now, when the Right needs to do something to villainize the gay rights movement, they simply have to mouth the magic word NAMBLA. "OMG all these gay people just want to GRAB YOUR SON OFF THE STREET IN BROAD DAYLIGHT AND RAPE HIM!"

I mean, look at it this way: if they cannot rationally comprehend the difference between someone giving consent and someone who is incapable of giving consent (children, animals, etc.), how the hell can any of them be trusted to HONOR the idea of consent? They have no functional moral compass whatsoever. They lack the normal human inner conscience that tells the rest of us, "This is wrong and here's why." I think that conscience and empathy are deeply connected, which is probably why they have no compassion for poor people or other oppressed people either--they lack both.

Frankly? I truly believe that the right-wing mindset is a severe mental illness in and of itself, and I say that in all seriousness.

So long as they've never been caught and have never admitted it in a way that the military can find out about it, anyway. So can pedophiles who feel attraction toward same-sex children, or (more typically) both. It's all a matter of whether or not they've been busted yet. We probably already have NAMBLA members in the military. Unlike being gay, though, being a pedophile really IS a severe mental illness. These are people who, by definition, want sex with someone who cannot consent. They are rapists. Consenting gay adults are not rapists. They are doing nothing illegal. Comparing the two is idiotic, especially when you consider that most pedophiles are adult men who claim to be otherwise heterosexual. Let's ban all heterosexuals from the military! You know--just in case.
