I don't understand how Kucinich fans can like Al Gore.
They are polar opposites on issues of trade. Gore was THE point man in the clinton administration for NAFTA, china-MFN, WTO and fast-track.

It would be an amazing turn-around, if so. Remember Al Gore debating Ross Perot on NAFTA? Gore was the biggest free-trader in the Clinton administration.

He did his job well. Calling him the "biggest free-trader" doesn't gel with what he has said and done after leaving office.

30. no, because he hasn't, but the issue is the use of the term "free-trader"... |
|
in it's negative connotation, which if you look at http://www.issues2000.org/Al_Gore_Free_Trade.htm">Gore's take on Free trade, doesn't accurately reflect his stance at all.

I'm from Connecticut and Lieberman hasn't been a Democrat for years. If he was just moderate I could live with him but he is the most Conservative asshat I know. As for Dennis....I'd love to see the Liberal moniker around our necks....it's becoming very fashionable don't you know?

37. I doubt Gore has changed his views much, but there is a lot of common ground |
|
on that issue. At its best, free trade helps struggling nations by allowing their own entrepeneurs a larger world market, and it pumps money into poor economies, ultimately bringing the rest of the world to our level (even if it does depress our level to some degree). That's a progressive's wet dream, or at least progressives who see the global structure as more important than the American structure. The problem isn't the concept of free trade, so much as the complete non-regulation of the way it is carried out now.
At its worst, of course, free trade brings exploitation to struggling nations too weak to fend it off, and it replaces struggling local employers with multi-national corporations who cut wages and benefits. It also allows regulations to be skirted, responsibilities to be shirked, etc.
I think both Gore and Kucinich would support those positives and oppose those negatives. The difference is that Kucinich doesn't (I assume) believe it is possibel to work free trade to achieve the positives and eliminate the negatives, whereas Gore (based on his Perot debate) does.
If they start from the assumption that the free trade agreements won't be overturned, then the best solution is to minimize the negatives and enhance the positives, and on the specific issues within that paradigm, I suspect that Gore and Kucinich would agree. So Kucinich would have to yield a little, but not do a 180. He could even approach it skeptically, with the attitude "I don't believe it can work, but IF it's possible, this is what we need to do."
Still not my dream ticket, but that issue could be worked out. There have been bigger positional differences on successful tickets.

Remember his about-face on abortion in 2003, and his lessening of his religious iconography in his campaign speeches.

Dennis deserves a chance at the Presidency but he is unelectable so this would be the way to get him the exposure that could eventually lead to him being President.
Honestly though, any of the current candidates (with the exception of Hillary Clinton) as a second to Gore sounds great to me.

22. Is he thinking of adopting Gore Vidal? |
|
Seriously, I don't know what Kucinich would bring to a Gore ticket. Gore would already have a lot of the progressive vote (which is ironic considering how badly the progressives used to shred him around here). Kucinich's geographic base is too regional to matter (It might be different if he could carry Ohio for Gore). I don't see how that would help Gore. It would help Kucinich, obviously, but Gore would need someone to draw voters that he wouldn't already get, regionally or demographically or politically. Or he would need a superstar to accentuate his own draw. I don't see how Kucinich does that.
Edwards would accentuate Gore (the way Gore did for Clinton), Obama and Clinton would add demographic boosts, though they are both demographics we already get. Gore needs someone who either pulls really well in the south (Clark, maybe?), or someone who can speak to independents (Clinton, Richardson).
I don't know. None of those are great matchups for him, really. I don't see Kucinich as that good for him. On the ticket, I mean. Kucinich's support would help him.
Of course, if Gore got the nomination and chose Kucinich, I'd be all like "DENNIS DAH MAN!!!" :)
