5. Baltimore is Ridiculous

Last snow they did not plow at all. This time no one is even expecting it. But there is over two feet of snow here. No one can drive unless they are parked on a major route. Everyone is going to be housebound for at least a week at this rate, and tomorrow's snow is just going to make it worse. Baltimore City is a horrible example of local government, and really reinforces the GOP meme that government doesn't work.

We get a big his usually about every 5-10 years, and some years we get no snow at all. While I think it would be great to be totally prepared for this kind of snow, I don't know if the area can justify the expense.

Another thing you've got in the North are public expectations. People wouldn't put up with this up there. Being paralyzed for a weekend is understandable -- not for a week to ten days.

My dad, and I tried going to work today, but we got stuck trying to get out of our driveway. we had to get help from neighbors to get our car back into our driveway so it would block the road. My dad claims, that the snow plow came last night, but I don't believe him he I look at our road. My local government snow removal sucks also.

They just decide not to run over budget. There are plows sitting idle or going over snow emergency routes that don't need it while entire neighborhoods are snowbound for a week. It permates the entire city government. Not all governments are this way, but Baltimore certainly is. Anyone who lives here knows it.

I do think that if you believe in government, you have to insist on some accountability to the public. I understand that there's been a storm, but it's now 10-12 days of snow of the ground with no effort of plowing at any time. And by the time it's over, it will be over three weeks.

She used the city's poor snow removal effort to beat him. Jane just served one term. Harold Washington beat her in the primary.

The storm that gave her the win was an awful one. I went 40 miles north to visit my parents for the Martin Luther King weekend. The storm was on the Friday into Saturday. When I woke up Saturday we could just see the roof of my car. The state couldn't keep the highways clear because of strong winds blowing snow back over roads that had already been plowed. It took 3 tries for a plow to navigate my parents' rural road. It was finally safe enough to head home the Tuesday after the storm.

Every municipality in the area had problems with snow removal. Not just Chicago.

I'm not from Chicago, so please accept my apologies.

I am from a rural area in the Lake Michigan snow belt. There is a section of my parent's road that is usually impassible in blizzards. It turns into one big drift. When the snow finally stops, the county has to send in its ultra-heavy truck and plow combintion called the "Oshkosh." You know you're in trouble if even the Oshkosh can't get through.

That's the case in many rowhouse neighborhoods. And in older parts of the city it is even narrower. How would you propose they push 30" of snow one full block and not destroy the parked cars in the process?

the same way they do it all over the country, and on streets that were plowed the first day. It is not a question of infeasibility.

The city got buried and it is bound to take extra time to respond. Instead of doing that, the city government is simply shrugging and deciding to do nothing for the duration. Which is this case is likely to be at least ten days. That is not a legitimate government response.

There are narrow streets like the ones you describe, and there is a logistical issue with those streets. But street widths alternate, and they are often adjacent to roads that are more than twice as wide. Neither type is getting plowed. It is a question of indifference, bad management, and unaccountability.

Government doesn't work if it's not held accountable. If this were a private corporation, you and and a lot of other people would be calling for heads to roll and things would change. That is why people falsely assume that government doesn't work and has to be replaced by private corporations.

The Baltimore City government is indifferent, incompetent, and completely unaccountable. That is not true of any other place I have lived in New Jersey, Connecticut, North Carolina, or Ohio. It is an outlier, and believe me, it creates anti-government sentiment by the boatload.

19. I'm in Newark DE and the NWS is saying 10-18 for us on top of our

already 25". The local paper sent out a notice today to tell people to check on and shovel off any flat roofs they have on their properties or businesses and to clear snow away from vents, etc.

Being a good neighbor paid off this last time. Hubby shoveled about 20 houses when we had that 6" of fluff last week (actually took the shovel with him when he walked the dog). We came out yesterday morning to find that someone had taken a snowblower to a major part of our sidewalks, plus a neighbor on an ATV w/ a snow plow attached was plowing out the ends of people's driveways.

Public Service Announcement time - check on your neighbors, pick up something from the store if they need it, take a dinner over to them, make sure they have heat, shovel for them if they have a hard time doing it themselves. I know some of our elderly neighbors may need a grocery or drug store run before tomorrow evening.

NewsChannel 8 just said 10 for the DC Metro area. No 6's to be found. Twenty inches northeast of town toward Baltimore.

I'm waiting to find out if Metro is running above ground tomorrow. Word expected around 6 pm.

I think that Wednesday will be a disaster, and Thursday will look like Sunday.

I might not get to work until Friday. Or Saturday. Or next week.

48. DC area DUers: there is a Metro service update for Tuesday.

I found it on the Washington Post website.

Above ground service will be available except on the Red Line. Apparently, track conditions in Montgomery County are hideous

There is a little more bus service, but again, Montgomery County has little service.

No word on when Metro will close Tuesday evening. I suspect that they will close sooner than they did on Friday, considering the fact that no snowfall will be melting when it hits the ground. This time, almost all the snow will be hitting snow or ice, and all of it is likely to stick.

I just called in to work to let them know that I will not be in tomorrow, again.

I don't expect to see the office until Friday, at the earliest.
