Who won the Orangeburg debate?

April 26, 2007 10:00 PM CDT

ORANGEBURG (WIS) - If you watched the Thursday evening debate in Orangeburg, you may have your own idea on who won. SurveyUSA conducted a poll on that topic among 403 South Carolina debate viewers, and Senator Barack Obama came out on top.

Thirty-one percent gave that honor to Obama. Senator Hillary Clinton took second place, with 24 percent. Fourteen percent of respondents thought Senator John Edwards emerged as a leader among the candidates.

Obama did three times better than Clinton and twice as well as Edwards among South Carolina's Independents. Obama and Clinton tied among Democrats. Edwards and Obama tied among Republicans. Clinton won among white viewers. Of the respondents, 60 percent were white and 36 percent were black.

SurveyUSA contacted 1,250 South Carolina adults. Of those, 403 said they listened to the debate and were included in the survey.

7. Only the people who watched the debate were asked who won.

8. They asked only those who'd listened the second question.
Quoting: "Asked of 403 who listened to the debate"

I still wonder if they were watching (or listening to) the same debate I watched. I thought Edwards did best, followed by Biden.

12. I called my folks as soon as it was over, but neither one had realized
that the debate was going to be on. I suspect my dad was watching Law and Order. My Mom who is a technophobe 1st Class will probably watch it on the computer tomorrow.

10. Obama finished himself off
with his statements about Iran. That is with me anyway. He has lost my support.

Sorry O, you screwed up and screwed up badly.

13. Do you realize he, Hillary and Edwards share the same view about Iran and
that people that think like Kucinich and Gravel in terms of foreign policy are a very small minority in this country?

15. That's okay. The people he picked up from that Iran statement
will take your place. Kucinich and Gravel are probably the only ones who don't hold Obama's position.

9. Almost half (49%) of the voters in the SC 2004 primary were black
and Obama said the Confederate flag should be put in a museum. I bet he won a lot of those votes with that one remark, which none of the pundits (all terra all the time) picked up on.

16. It was lovely, the way he delivered it
The question was first put to Biden (How come you are having a Democratic debate in a state the NAACP is asking blacks to boycott economically until they take the Confederate flag down from the statehouse grounds?)and he went on and on about Clyburn without taking a position on the flag. Then it was put to Obama, who immediately said, "First of all, I think the Confederate flag belongs in a museum."

The contrast was striking and I'm sure a lot of South Carolinians picked up on it.
