HSBC sent me a letter. No more free checking. It will now cost $3 a month |

Banks will find new ways to make up for the losses brought to them by the Credit Card Act that will take effect in February. Scumbags.

1. Have you looked into joining a federal credit union? |
|
I think they do better than the big banks at this sort of thing.

2. Consider moving your money |
|
to a local credit union. CU's aren't focused on high profits as big banks are. They'll treat you right.

3. Find a small local bank..You'll probably find your free checking |
|
and a lot better service too..
and then do your banking online..no checks at all to fuss with, and a very good record of all your spending:)

You also have the ability to make unilateral changes to the business relationship between you and your bank. Move your money to an institution that deserves to stay in business, which would be non-bailout banks and credit unions.

6. I have free checking because I am a senior |
|
that is in all Canadian banks.
When we are 65 we get to pay 100 bucks a year and then every prescription, no matter what it is , is only 2 bucks.
I love Canada...
watch the Olympics.
I cried today when I watched the Olympic song being introduced. If you can watch the video, do it. It is so inspiring.
I am American born but Canadian by choice.
I never regret it.

If you retire in Canada & buy property, can you get citizenship? The online "test" pretty much eliminated us:(...but we could afford to buy a home there to retire in..

9. Move your money. It is the only way they will change. |
|
Get 2 million people to move their accounts with average daily balance of only $500 and that is a cool billion.
Billion here, billion there pretty soon you are talking really money.

No one should be paying anything for a standard monthly checking account. I am a member of a credit union and it is free. There are probably small local banks in your area too that would give free checking.

12. I'm waiting for my letter from Chase |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-08-10 06:32 PM by WatchWhatISay
As it stands now, because my husband has a CD there (paying almost no interest, of course) we never get overdraft charges. Instead they just transfer an advance from our Chase credit card into our checking account.
So even though they are paying us .01 percent on that checking account we save hundreds each year not having to worry about overdraft fees.
I'd love to go to a community bank, but this deal is just too good to pass up. But I figure it won't be long before they start charging for that advantage, and I'm almost hoping it is enough to make us just walk away.
