7. Oh hell, that one goes back for decades
Adlai Stevenson was beaten handily by Ike in part because Ike tapped into the ignorant vote, which demonized Stevenson as a "pointy headed egghead".

Intelligence and education has been demonized by the masses for at least a century.

21. I was called an egghead, a brainiac, and other lovely things in school, and regarded as something
not quite right. however, once I got to college, an institution where learning was actually prized, it was a whole other world. one of my professors pointed out that, merely by virtue of being there, of getting our degrees, we would be seen as "elitist"--and he said we should be proud of that, proud of our accomplishments.

the anti-intellectualism in this country really worries me. I remember the comments made about al gore after the debates ("he reminds you of the person you all hated in school for being so smart". being one of those hated people, it really ticked me off to see gore being derided for actually knowing what in the hell he was talking about.)

all of this reminds me of a person I knew years ago who fits right in with this mentality. he informed me that, contrary to rational belief, it was actually the uninformed, the unlearned, and the street people who ran things in this country. I sadly realize that, at least these days, he seems to have two out of three right.

This will be the destruction of our country: this obsession that if we are dumb and ignorant and uneducated, we are somehow more "American" deep down.

24. So, just how educated does one have to be in order to be called an "Elitist"?
And how much general shit does one have to know?

I know lots of really cool shit, but I'm not sure how useful it is...

I think that either alone puts one over the threshold.

30. She reminds me of the scene from "O' Brother Where Art Thou"
Where the Homer Stokes is talking about "...them fancy people, think we descended from monkeys. That ain't my history!! That ain't my religion!!"

She is feeding into fear of people who seek to gain knowledge of their world. She is pitiful.

Education is like wealth, it can make you think that you are better than everyone else and therefore deserving of special consideration.

36. I figured it out a year or so ago, & it appalled me beyond words. I thought elitism was about power
... and money and influence.

But education? My gods, what have we become?! I worked like a dog for my degrees, and I mean that unlike that moron Bush I *worked* my way through! And somehow that didn't translate into becoming a gazillionaire with the power of life and death over mere mortals!

What the hell is wrong with these resentful people and those who manipulate them?

Hekate
