Take GM Corn off the shelves! Please sign petition.
"As Monsanto prepares to unleash it's latest GM corn supergroup, a recent study in the International Journal of Biological Sciences has shown that the crops caused kidney and liver damage, and some heart, adrenal, spleen and blood damage and rats. Yet the corn has been approved for human consumption in the U.S."

Please sign the petition (link below) to take GM Corn off the shelves until after an independent two year peer reviewed study can be completed.

I think one of the best ways to deal with GMOs in our food supply is to require food labels that clearly state "contains GMO ingredients." Most people would not buy them and it would discourage food manufacturers from using GMOs.

6. I think labels would be great - consumers have a right to know what they are buying.

12. Definitely.

In Europe, any product containing over 0.9 percent GMO has to be labeled, and consumers generally won’t eat foods that test above this level. In contrast, most US and Canadian consumers don’t even know what GMOs are and do not realize that they are contained in the majority of processed foods. “The Grocery Manufacturers Association of America estimates that GMOs are in 75 to 80 percent of conventional processed food, mainly because corn and soy get turned into so many of their ingredients,” Thompson explained.

“We really believe that people deserve an informed choice about whether to consume GMOs, and that people have the right to be educated about what GMOs are,” said Thompson. “They need to realize that if they’re not picking out non-GMO products, there’s a good chance that they are consuming GMOs.”

11. However with over 60% of all long grain rice being tainted by GMO
Edited on Sun Feb-14-10 04:50 PM by truedelphi
Even the "organic" long grain rice, And an equal amount with wheat and corn, what would consumers buy?

How long could we avoid GMO?

Our household now depends on mostly veggies and fruit, but in the future Monsanto will have cornered the farmers' fields with their GMO radishes, beets, cauliflower, carrots, etc.

And with the Obama Administration full speed ahead on this issue, as they have Valseck at the head of the Dept of Agriculture and Good Ol Mike Taylor over at the FDA, we may well be doomed.

BTW, one reason that our grocery shelves are packed with the GMO's is that initially farmers thought that they would be selling their grains to Europe. But the WTO protests made it impossible for the European nations to be forced into GMO mode - so now the European nations refuse our American grain and it has nowhere to go but here!

14. Yes, European nations refuse GMOs along with additional countries:
http://organic.lovetoknow.com/History_of_GMOs

Other countries have already passed legislation to require food labels that state if GMOs are present. Here is a timeline of GMOs label legislation in other countries:

•1998: The European Union declares that GMO foods must be labeled as such.
•2000: The following countries passed laws requiring labels for GMO foods:
◦Australia
◦Czech Republic
◦Hong Kong
◦Russia
•2001: The following countries started to require special labeling for GMO foods:
◦Japan
◦South Korea
◦Taiwan
Many other countries have completely banned the use of GMOs or have suspended any GMO crops until the full environmental and health effects of these crops can be better researched.

We must put pressure on the FDA and the Obama Administration to require labels and like you said, it will be difficult.

15. Thank you for the additional information
BTW I no longer bother to write or call any Dems or Repugs except for a very short list.

The day that one of the interns at the WH laughed at me for my calling and imploring this Admin to consider Single Payer Universal health Care was the final straw.

They all do their Corporate Master's bidding, and until I personally have the money to persuade them otherwise I cannot be bothered.

They know what is right, but the Ca-ching of the cash registers for their campaign funds means far far more to them than what is moral and just.

I'm not against genetically modified organisms in general, only with the way they are being rushed into production with the ecosystem, including humans, being used as guinea pig. If nature and people are given priority over profits, GMO can be done well. That isn't the case at this time.

There is also the issue of giving Monsanto a monopoly on the world's seed stocks.

our digestive system breaks the stuff down into its basic components and the genetic traits are meaningless.
