Name the Best Women in Congress
Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 03:54 PM by undeterred
Just to have a positive Friday afternoon thread. One of my favorite people in Congress is 3rd term Senator Patty Murray of Washington. She's always been a big supporter for education, health care, veterans issues, and national security, but she's humble and you don't hear much about her.. :patriot:

16. I'll admit it, I miss Katherine Harris. What was she best at, you say?
Well, aside from making me laugh my ass off every time she opened her mouth, she was also one of the best advertisements to "Vote Democratic" that ever lived. No sentient being could take her seriously or, by extension, wish to share a party affiliation with her. And who can ever forget Moxie and Spunk?

21. Jane Harman
who is not afraid to be a supportive of the military and be a Democrat.

She has been serving her constituents who depend on DoD projects and does not cower to please the far left wing of the party.

26. Lois Capps - San Luis Obispo/Santa Barbara County, Calif.
Lois is one of those politicians that does her work quietly but with great purpose. She represents everyone in her constituency, not just the ones that elected her. As a former public health nurse, she has a wonderful understanding of real life. Lois came to be in the Congress because her wonderful husband, Walter, who was in his first term there, passed away unexpectedly. Lois filled out his term, then continues to be re-elected. As a former volunteer for Walter Capps campaign, I spent a lot of time around Lois. I remember being at an event with them, featuring Michael and Kitty Dukakis (Kitty, btw, is an incredibly sweet person, and Michael is humble, funny, and brilliant). What struck me about Lois was that I saw her having conversations with various staff members at the hotel at the event. Later one of the staff told us that Lois was the public health nurse and had helped her when she was young and pregnant, and needed assistance. Lois remains down to Earth, and remembers why she is elected.

I do like Patty Murray, as well... but Lois is an unsung hero in Congress.

This thread reminds me of a great quote:

"Twelve years ago Barbara Jordan, another Texas woman, made the keynote address to this convention, and two women in a hundred and sixty years is about par for the course. But if you give us a chance, we can perform. After all, Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did. She just did it backwards and in high heels." ~ Ann Richards, sassy politician and Governor of Texas, 1988

(Oh, how I miss her ~ and Molly Ivins too!)
