Debunking the whole GOP "family values" nonsense
We always hear about how the GOP is the party that supports family values. Well, that might be true...if you happen to be a white upper-class Christian family. But let's dig into those "family values" shall we?

First of all, if you're gay or lesbian, you can pretty much scratch yourself off the list. The GOP is not interested in your family values. All over the country, gay couples are fighting for the right to marry. Here in the state of Florida, it's still illegal for homosexual couples to adopt children. The state would rather place orphaned children into a never-ending series of foster homes than with a stable, loving, committed homosexual couple. How's that for FAMILY VALUES?

What about the poor? The GOP sure as hell doesn't care about your family values. Can't afford health care? Your job doesn't offer health benefits, or they're too expensive? Tough shit pal. You see, the GOP views health care as a privilege, not a basic human right. They have to make sure that the health insurance companies continue to rake in record profits, and they sure as hell can't do that if they're forced to offer insurance to just anyone, with lower premiums/deductibles/co-payments, and covering pre-existing conditions. If you're poor and come down with a serious health problem, you have two choices - die; or go to the emergency room and plunge your family deep in debt.

Not only that, but they've practically eliminated our manufacturing base - which I suppose might be good for families living in China, but not so much for families living in the US. If you're one of the lucky ones to have a job, chances are it's not a union job - they took care of that a long time ago in many states. If you're unemployed, well you're pretty much shit out of luck, since the GOP would love nothing more than to cut off your benefits. You see, it's not fair to make companies pay for your unemployment. By letting companies keep more of their money, it will trickle down and they'll hire more people. Hmmm, where have we heard that phrase before?

If you live in an inner-city neighborhood, the GOP isn't really all that concerned about your family values either. Let's take away money for education, after-school programs, anything that might offer hope for someone looking for a way out. But hey, don't worry - there's always the military to consider! They're always looking for fodder to send off to Iraq or Afghanistan! Here's your family value - a pine coffin with a flag draped over it!

If you're a minority, they'll say that they embrace you - but they don't really mean it. You're always number one on their suspect list. All Muslims are potential terrorist extremists. If you have a daughter that converts to Christianity, it's okay to rip her from her home for her own safety, without even notifying authorities. Haitian children are obviously better off being taken away from their families by a group of strangers - after all, they're Christians, and they mean well. Not only that, but this decades long "war on drugs" has completely ripped apart the black community - how else do you explain the extreme disproportionate percentage of African Americans serving time in jail? Yep, there's some real fine family values at work right there. Fuck education and rehabilitation - lock them up and throw away the key!

So whenever I hear some rethug talking about "family values", I just have to wonder - WHOSE family values do they mean? Sure as hell not MY family!

5. Republicans wish Americans were more like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons
but it's too bad that the very very opposite has been true for a frickin long time, and they still can't deal with it!

BTW, if you wanna know where I got that analogy, it's here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ervjj_qRXXQ

When Fox reran The Simpsons episode "Stark Raving Dad" in early 1992, it showed a clip of presidential candidate George H.W. Bush making a campaign speech that included his Waltons/Simpsons remark and "read my lips no new taxes".

Anyway, this is a good thread right here. :yourock:
