It's Official: Karen Bass To Run For Congress

LOS ANGELES (AP) ― California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass is running for a Los Angeles-area congressional seat.

She quickly picked up an endorsement Wednesday from Rep. Diane Watson, the Democrat who holds the seat and will retire at year's end.

The 56-year-old Bass -- a Democrat who was the first black woman to lead the Assembly -- will step down as speaker on March 1 but remain in office until later this year.

She enters the House race a favorite to replace Watson in a seat that has been held for years by black politicians.
