I saw John Edwards in the shampoo aisle
Yes, the presidential hopeful got two overpriced haircuts -- but when he's at home he goes to the local grocery store like everyone else.

By Erik Ose

April 27, 2007 | CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- My wife and I ran into John Edwards in the shampoo aisle the other night. No, really, we did. My wife didn't believe it was him at first. "Yeah, right," she said. "He's behind us ... buying hair gel?" But there he was, at the neighborhood grocery store. His 8-year-old daughter, Emma Claire, was with him, and she was busy devouring something with a straw. This was no staged press event, like George H.W. Bush's ill-fated trip to a grocer's convention during the '92 campaign, when he was famously accused of being amazed by a checkout scanner. There were no cameras, no entourage. Just a dad wearing a T-shirt and shorts, with his little girl, stopping by the store to pick up something on the way home. A dad who also happens to be running for president.

John Edwards has been in the news a lot lately. But it hasn't been for his universal healthcare proposal, or for his ideas about making it easier for most Americans to file their taxes. Not even for his wife Elizabeth's courageous fight against her recurring cancer and their decision to carry on with a presidential campaign. Edwards' most recent round of publicity has been all about his hair.

~Snip~

There's a problem here, though. When the media spends time covering "issues" like a candidate's haircuts it blatantly overlooks what's really at stake: Whoever sits in the White House has enormous power to change things for America, for good or bad. Right now our country is falling apart, thanks to two terms under the worst president in history. We can't afford another George W. Bush. The media has a responsibility to help voters make sense of how the men and women running for the Oval Office would operate once they got there. Haircut stories don't cut it.

At a time when more and more of us are finding the American dream harder and harder to achieve, there's a lot for the 2008 candidates to address. To Edwards' credit, he is the first Democratic contender to release a detailed plan for achieving universal healthcare coverage. Rising healthcare costs and lack of coverage is the No. 1 issue most voters say worries them about their economic future.

~Snip~

Let's not forgot the war in Iraq, now in its fifth year. Bush's war drains American lives and resources daily -- an estimated $8.4 billion a month that could be spent addressing needs here at home. Edwards has repeatedly apologized for his vote to go to war in Iraq, calling it a "mistake," and pledges to withdraw all troops if elected president.

For the record, we didn't see John Edwards pick out any hair products in the store. He used the regular checkout lane, chose plastic over paper, and put his own cart away before leaving. Edwards may have gotten two overpriced haircuts on the campaign trail, but when he's home, hanging out with his kids, he goes to the grocery store like everyone else. That should count for something. Especially at a moment when our country is in trouble because the Bush administration never cared about the interests of average Americans, the kind of people who shop at grocery stores.

This candidate is for real - he's genuine and truly wants to be a public servant to the people of this country. This country needs honesty and transparency back in the White House and I believe Edwards to be the one to bring back that honor and dignity.

2. I believe John and Elizabeth Edwards are the genuine deal
Thanks for sharing your story.

As you pointed out, there is a lot more at stake here than the price of a haircut.

Do we want to take the chance that a Republican President might be in the position to place another right winger on the Supreme Court? The thought sends chills up and down my spine.

Vote Democratic in 2008, as if your life depended on it. Because it might.

6. He was the only one
last night to bring up the issue of a woman's health not being taken into consideration if she had to continue a pregnancy that wasn't viable - many lives may depend on it.

BTW - I wanted to reach inside the TV and punch Tucker last night, he was being truly an arse to Edwards' campaign manager.

13. Tucker being an arse? I'm shocked!
Truly, I don't think he can be anything else.

His Daddy was one of Scooter Libby's big financial supporters, which Tucker didn't disclose on his show. That's scummy, and shows that he won't let a little thing like conflict of interest stand in his way.

He has zero credibility.

And for all we know, he might have one of those little wire thingies bolted inside a kitchen cupboard that holds plastic grocery bags so he can put garbage in them. (I have one, and I haven't bought regular plastic trash bags since 1994.)

24. It's a shame that Edwards is being branded over a mistake in billing
The press is "Gor-ing" him.

Tonight on the McLaughlin Mess, it was all about Hillary and Obama and their answers about the hypothetical attacks on 2 US cities. The fact that Edwards response was excellent, including the need to use tools that could help prevent the creation of more terrorsts was totally ignored. The "other Brit" (not Blankley) made a crack about the fact that Edwards didn't joke about his haircuts and didn't have any soaring rhetoric (who did in the 30 seconds everyone had to talk about an issue?). He though Edwards was bad and Eleanor Clift said something about "poor Edwards" and I don't know what she said after that because my dog was on my case.

In short...we are being force fed Hillary-Obama: the Battle to be followed by Hillary the best; to be followed by Hillary-Bill and the subsequent demolition derby by the press and GOP.

Too bad Edwards will go down, but it will be a valiant effort and I applaud him for it...

I live in rural TN and know middle-class women who travel an hour and a half to Memphis and spend $150 to $200 for haircuts and highlights. I'm not one of them but in light of knowing these women, I didn't think that a millionaire spending $400 was too much! :silly:

30. I Sometimes Think He Gets Bad Advice
Like, didn't anyone on the campaign go, "Woah dude, don't charge that $400 haircut to the campaign. It will not play well with voters." And "Yo, man, what's up with that house?"

Some people accuse Edwards of being very calculating and phony, but I think if he were, he wouldn't be doing stupid stuff like this- he'd cultivate the populist, middle class image all the way, all the time.

He has a lot of good ideas, and we should focus on those. To people who don't like him because of IWR or some of his votes, fine. If you disagree with his vision, okay. But don't criticize every personal decision he makes.

I think we need some one in the White House who understands both worlds. Both the working class and the disgustingly rich. And I think Edwards is that person.

That's the going rate for a cut and highlights. $400 seems high, but I'm not quite on that pay scale just yet.

I'm not mad at him. Totally ridiculous thing to be mad about. Some Democrats have money. Big deal. Oh no....John Edwards became highly successful and is living the "American Dream".....somebody stop him!

63. But... IMO, This Crap Wouldn't EVEN Have Been Important If He Wasn't
a THREAT to a campaign. I don't know how many people caught it, but last Thursday as the FAUX Debate... right off the bat Bill Richardson made some off the wall comment about "blow-dried" candidates!

I HAD been thinking Richardson would be a possible VP choice of mine, but when he sounded off like that, he TOTALLY lost me!! All this calling out about Edwards and his "personal" grooming etiquette only made me MORE determined to defend him.

I have many reasons why I support him and in time will probably make "the case" but right now I don't have the time because I just got some "un-announced" company and they want to "party" a bit. So we'll be throwing back some brew or "whatever" and I'm sure I can re-visit this later.

I would really LOVE to contact the campaign regarding a song that Five For Fighting recorded... it has the words, Go, Go Johnny, Go and it's more up to date than the one he used in the past!

I think he will be THE MAN, and Elizabeth WILL be the PRINCESS! I LOVE her!! And no, I'm married and i'M "not that way" but if it was, it's MY business ANYWAY!!!!

38. Wow, Edwards wants to reverse the bankruptcy "reform" bill.
Edited on Sat Apr-28-07 09:29 AM by w4rma

A big part of this foreclosure crisis is that nonexistent oversight of lending companies under the Bush administration allowed them to sucker people into loans that would be almost impossible to pay back. It should come as no surprise that Bush put the wishes of big financial firms first, since credit card giant MBNA has been his single largest corporate donor. Edwards' platform includes legislation to help stop predatory lending, which he recently called a "shameful practice" that is "compromising our strength as a nation."

52. Because of his emphasis on reducing severe poverty...
...John Edwards is my choice for President at this point in time. He is the Democratic candidate whom I believe to be most committed to meeting the Millennium Development Goals of cutting worldwide poverty substantially by 2015. In addition, as President, he would be great on the environment and domestic issues, and work well with other nations' leaders.

I also believe that he and Richardson are among the most electable of Democrats. He comes from the South, admittedly from a state the Democrats are unlikely to win, but his southern roots may serve him well in potentially grabbing electoral votes from Florida and Arkansas, where we can win.

54. Please tell me he didn't buy "Breck."
Wasn't it Ann Cooter who called him the "Breck girl"? For a right-wing fascist, she sometimes has an old-time "queenie" sense of humor.

Then on the other hand, it would be a nice FU to Annie.

58. What A Great Picture Of Them Both!! Would LOVE To Have It As An
AVATAR!!! Thank you so much for posting this, I have said the same thing in the past. SURE, high price on hair-cut seems a bit over the top, but it SURELY isn't what will get America on the path to all that is ONCE WAS!!!

I participated in a Impeachment Rally today, and MANY people in my part of the U.S. of ASS are supporting Edwards, DESPITE all the HOOPLA! Many felt Obama is a GREAT candidate, but more likely for VP... not too many want Clinton. Just the scuttlebutt from down here in Southwest Florida!!!

Thanks again... I sure wish I had been in that grocery store!!!!

60. Regular happening in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham
There are lots of reports just like this -- friends and family who have run in to the Edwardses around town in everyday situations: the food court at the mall, the grocery store, school, ...

And like you, most of us try to respect their privacy and want them to maintain as normal a life as possible, under the circumstances. The reality of their lives is in stark contrast to the various manufactured attacks on them (e.g. the "bad neighbor", a theme also used in 2004).

61. I wish he had the proven qualifications to lead
cuz he sure inspires a lot of people.

I just don't see what he's done that makes his resume worthy of the hardest, most important job on the planet; and the two HUGE black marks on his resume, Iraq and the Patriot Act, fairly scream: Opportunistic politician checking the wind!!!

67. Every candidate has their weak side.
And EVERY candidate has made a compromised decision or two revealing their opportunistic political wind-checking side.

He's not my first choice, but I like him enough to be happy when he gets good press. Helps the whole party, I think.

68. Yeah, but these two are too important to forgive
...at least "forgive" in the sense of voting him into POTUS. They show that he is more interested in the politics and prestige of being president, than the actual life impacting decision making that a president must make.

Iraq and the Patriot Act. Two giant, world-changing chances at leadership. Two failures. Let Mr. Edwards spend some time in public service proving he can exercise good judgment before taking on the biggest, most critical job on the planet, imo.

70. Who cares about forgiveness?
I've made the same points you do (plus a few more), and if I thought he was going to win, I might make them louder. :) But to his defense, they were some of the earliest votes he made, and he has changed his official positions since then. He has also campaigned alongside someone with enough national experience to educate him better. He can be a good voice to have in this campaign. He excites people, he connects to some people. Maybe he will draw them to the party.

71. Well, in the sense I made clear I was talking about "forgiveness"
we all should.

72. It was an attempt at a pun
You said by "forgiveness" you meant voting him president. I was trying to be funny, meaning I wasn't talking about voting him into office. However, rereading it, I failed miserably. :( Should have put forgiveness in quotes, I guess. Even then it was too vague.

I agree with you on Edwards. I just don't like seeing any candidate trashed, especially in a thread by that candidate's supporters. Not that I haven't been guilty of that a few times. Quite a few. I just didn't like the results of my doing it--mainly, pissing off other Democrats over candidates who weren't going to win, anyway. I didn't really mean to start anything with you, I was just posting my thoughts. Still buddies?

73. Buds
It's cool. :toast:

I just worry about our side doing essentially what their side did, electing someone based on the way they make us feel rather than solid, proven leadership skills and prescient wisdom; someone who will have to rely on good advisers (like Bush promised to do) rather than someone who can genuinely mix-it-up with those good advisers and really know whether or not they are being straight with him/her.

I see Edwards as having about as good a shot as anyone at winning, I suppose I hope I'm wrong about that. I'd say the same things about Hillary's choices too.

76. Same fear, different candidates.
I worry about that with Edwards, and more so with Obama, who's been all over the map in the short time he's been in office. Hillary's one of the few I trust, but the smears on her are worse than on Gore in 2000. I could support Gore, if he got in the race. Or Richardson, but he's trailing too badly. The rest have no chance.

64. Meh. I saw W in a shopping mall, Ann Richards in a grocery store, and Zell Miller
in a Cracker Barrel. Yes, the last one sounds like a joke, and no, it isn't. Even better, the Cracker Barrel was on Jimmy Carter Blvd, in Atlanta, and my younger daughter tried to run him over with a toy VW.

With W, it was before he became governor, and it was a very rich mall.

Ann Richards was in the HEB on Red River in Austin, and she was governor.

I'm more impressed that Edwards was with his kid. But that's me. :)
