Tiger Woods, Buddhism, and Brit Hume's Christian arrogance
Today Tiger made his first public statement: an apology for and a confession of private transgressions made very public. In so doing, Tiger spoke out on being a Buddhist.

Tiger on Buddhism:

I have a lot of work to do, and I intend to dedicate myself to doing it. Part of following this path for me is Buddhism, which my mother taught me at a young age. People probably don’t realize it, but I was raised a Buddhist, and I actively practiced my faith from childhood until I drifted away from it in recent years. Buddhism teaches that a craving for things outside ourselves causes an unhappy and pointless search for security. It teaches me to stop following every impulse and to learn restraint. Obviously I lost track of what I was taught.

<snip>

Not to long ago Hume offered Tiger some unsolicited advice to find Jesus and convert to Christianity in order to "make a total recovery and be a great example to the world".

Hume's words denigrated Buddhism and insulted any intelligent viewers that may have been watching (given that Hume appears on Fox News, intelligent viewers would have been few and far between).

Hume said:

The extent to which he can recover seems to me depends on his faith. He is said to be a Buddhist. I don't think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith. So, my message to Tiger is, 'Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world.

Hume's religious arrogance was and is simply disgusting.

1. Tiger should go to monk
Edited on Sat Feb-20-10 03:29 PM by upi402
maybe upcountry

Buddhism says there are many paths up the mountain, maybe you'd like to pick one. It's the only major religion that doesn't want to destroy all others. In fact, it recognizes others. It doesn't want to convert and control.

Imagine that Britt.

14. Ironically Tiger's mother is a major contributor to Wat Metta

a Forrest Monestary in Escondido that is considered one of the best in the world

http://www.watmetta.org/

It receives visitors from all over the world and on the weekend can host up to 10,000 visitors from LA.

Unlike other Buddhist temples Wat Metta has few formal buildings and stresses meditation.

16. Yes, upon reflection
maybe Thailand wouldn't be the best place to go for the healing of his issue. I thought a poor region of a developing country would benefit from his having resided there as a monk.
Thanks for the link.

2. Hume should talk to a Buddhist monk for a few hours.
It might make a human being out of him.

13. What Hume said was not a religious statement ...
it was a political statement, and the manner in which the republicans have bastardized christianity beyond all belief ...

Being a christian, frankly, is not good enough ... Bill and Hillary were Christians, John Kerry was a christian ... BO is a christian ...

Still repulsively evil people to the wingers ...

But, to be REPUBILCAN and christian, means you have the ultimate get out of jail free card ... You can do ANYTHING, say something about it being between you and god, and it is all good ...

THAT was what Hume let slip when he babbled that ...

That was actually the brand of Christianity I was commenting on. There are good and bad people in every group.

6. I thought he would have been better going off to a monastery than a
sex clinic rehab - if he is sincere, that is.

There's a Buddhist temple in Chicago that has a dorm attached - it is spartan but it would have been good for him - if he could have done so anonymously.

Replace "Buddhist" with "Jewish" in that sentence, for instance.

Fucking offensive and bigoted.
