Poll question: On-star (GM autos)

A local drunk driver didn't pay for On-star. After a 3 person accident, she figured she should have had it. It is on talk radio here.

2. On-Star is JUST LIKE those webcam-equipped laptops
They can spy on you and are thus evil.

:sarcasm:

Seriously, your whereabouts can be monitored, as with cellphones.

But heaven forbid $1000 loaner laptops sent home with kids should have a security feature that would allow authorized people, such as police, from being able to track lost or stolen ones.

:P

3. Those on-star commercials are disturbing
There's this lady with a kid in the back and she's PANICING. I mean, she's broken down ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD and SHE'S FORGOTTEN THE NUMBER OF AAA, THE NUMBER OF THE SERVICE STATION NEAR HER HOUSE, AND ON TOP OF THAT, HER HUSBAND'S NUMBER!!!! SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! THANK GOD SHE HAS ON-STAR!

4. I had it free for a year with a new GM vehicle.
Even before the first oil change, I was rear-ended in Dallas by a telephone company truck. The driver was on a cell phone.

I pushed the emergency button and got an OnStar operator who called the police for me. I was connected with a sheriff in San Antonio! He and I were both incredulous. If you don't know, SA is about 300 miles away -- about a 4.5 hour drive. I got out my cell phone and called 911 myself.

As far as I'm concerned, it's worthless.

7. What does article have to do w/ Onstar?
She made a phone call from a GPS enabled CELL PHONE and the Police traced the phone call.

The word "onstar" doesn't appear anywhere in the article.

Personally I like the idea of OnStar wish it was an open platform and on more makes of vehicles.

9. If I were a dictator, I'd seize the OnStar offices
Edited on Sun Feb-21-10 07:34 PM by Canuckistanian
Imagine the power of knowing where people are, what they're saying and to be able to turn their engines off or lock them out of their cars at any time.

It would sure save a lot of valuable dictatin' time.

10. Things about On-star you might not know

Both our cars have On-star. We love it. I posted after talk radio Omaha talked about the drunk driver not knowing where she was as 3 people walked in the dark in the cold. Had she paid the monthly On-star fee, after the impact, On-star response would have been automatic. Much more to On-star than most people know.

13. I have it, also. Nice to know when your vehicle needs service, not
when oil companies or the local garage say you do. The last oil change I had On-Star emailed me that my oil needed changing. It had been 8500 miles since the last one.

14. GM oil changes are based on your driving and conditions

Marta drives like she is on a NASCAR track, I drive like a turtle. Hers is garaged. Mine is out in the deep cold of winter. She only gets half the miles I do between changes. The computer calculates temp, speed, rpm, miles, etc. in calculating your oil change interval.

Some GM's recommend up to 12,000 on oil changes depending on various factors.

16. Talk radio covered how IF she had activated On-star when she bought her used car

It would have sent a tow truck to her location. Not that it is a good thing, but she probably wouldn't have been ticketed for DWI.
