Unfortunately, Kansans have never had to consult their doctors about prolonged exposure to a sane Republican Legislature.

But there was a glimpse of sanity yesterday, when Republican men - who seem to like to tell women what to do with their bodies - got a taste of their own medicine.

During a debate on a bill dealing with insurance regulations, Rep. Pete DeGraaf (R-Mulvane) got an amendment added that would require women to buy separate insurance policies that covered abortions. It passed 73-45.

Assuming what's good for the goose is good for the gander, Rep. Ann Mah (D-Topeka) proposed an amendment that would require men to buy separate insurance policies that covered erectile dysfunction drugs. She pointed out that many insurance plans don't cover birth control, and asked why it was then fair to have women pay “the cost of Viagra for all the old guys who want to have sex?”

The bill would require a police report to be filed if the woman wants an abortion to be covered by her insurance under the incest or rape exemptions.

But groups that work with domestic violence victims worried that some victims may not want to report a rape or incest.

“Rape is a deeply traumatic event,” said Sandy Barnett, director of the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence. “Often (victims) are afraid of law enforcement and the criminal justice system itself.”

Lawmakers said that they sympathized, but that women should have to report they were raped if they want the abortion covered by insurance.

“You’d have to have a report that someone stole your car,” said Rep. Steve Brunk, a Bel Aire Republican. “This is kind of the same thing.”

And this "women should buy separate abortion insurance policies" thing is not surprising. Bart Stupak successfully got that kind of amendment passed by the US House.

Bottom line? Never propose legislation telling people what to do with themselves if it does not cause someone else to bleed, break a bone, lose breath, or get severely stressed out.

they don't hate medical science when it allows them to have babies or have sex when they get old.
No chance an infertile couple will be advised that it is gods will that they not have children. Pull out all the stops and do whatever you have to at whatever expense to get pregnant.

29. I agree with the idea behind this (i.e. separate insurance shouldn't be required to cover abortion)

But I'm always troubled by the attitude about things like this on this site, which basically boils down to "ED drugs only benefit old white guys, and then their put-upon wives suffer when suddenly they have to go through the burden of having sex again." It just reinforces the whole women-as-sexual-gatekeeper stereotype, as well as the idea that men are horndogs and that women would so much rather be doing anything other than having sex.

Did it never occur to anyone that maybe these drugs sometimes benefit couples who have healthy, balanced relationships, and who might actually desire intimacy in their lives in a mutually fulfilling way? Why does any mention of ED drugs immediate conjure images of some rich wrinkly old white guy pestering his trophy wife for sex she doesn't want to have?

It's just another stupid patriarchal assumption that hurts both sexes.

and almost everyone posting in this thread agrees with this premise. I get the impression that most of the female DUers posting here do not enjoy sex, and would be happy if their partner suffered from ED and could not obtain drugs for it. If I were ever to get ED, my wife would be just as eager as I would be (if not more so) for me to obtain the appropriate treatment.

I was initially expressing my elation with this fine WOMAN'S actions. There was no malice or minorizing or diminishment implied or intended in my choice of descriptor. I'm 65 this month - volunteered to go push back the red tide years ago - believe in the progressive way of thinking and am patriotic, even while my country pursues ends that embarrass me as a citizen. I feel "brash" enough to use "Gal" and not feel I have to apologize. Further, I'd bet a buck to a cops donut that this woman congressional representative would NOT chastize me if I said to her face that I thought she was one stand-up gal.

and womens birth control is covered but you pay a co payment for it like most drugs.

My best friend lives near Sydney and we have talks all the time about her health care. Abortions are fully covered too and thats in the free health care.

They have been trying though for years to get it privatized and selling policies that at first offered tons of massage and stuff extra like that. She said now that people are on it they are pulling back on what they give. The reason most people change over and pay is to pick their own doctor.
