ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Until the first Democratic presidential debate here on Thursday night, former senator Mike Gravel campaigned in almost total obscurity since becoming the first Democrat to declare more than a year ago, in April 2006.

He's the one to say not only that the emperor has no clothes, but that the emperor wannabes have no clothes," said national pollster John Zogby, adding, "There is an angry voter. I don't know how that will take shape, it's way too early. But you got a sense why Mike Gravel is in the race on Thursday and that he is in the race."

The reaction to Gravel's performance has overwhelmed his campaign. His aides said they got more requests for interviews yesterday than in the first 12 months of the campaign.

"He started out with less money than the cost of a John Edwards haircut," said Elliott Jacobson, Gravel's national finance director.

1. I'm sure the "angry voter"
has plenty of "angry dollars".

If the MSM had any sense they would jump on board the angry bandwagon.

3. He says things about foreign policy and defense no other Democrats are ready to say.

Just for that, I was happy to hear him. It was a disgrace to see all these democrats answer without any challenge to the questions on how to go to war in Iran, how to attack Al Quaeda (where, how - if we missed the intelligence signals on two attacks on the US, it is unlikely we know where to get the guys)., and not to introduce any real notions of REAL diplomacy, such as working with other countries, not telling other countries what to do.

Has the American public been so much endoctrinated that it is a fault not to quote Israel among the three first allies of the US (is it a problem if they are only 4th)?

This debate told me a lot about the fact that the Dems are still so much afraid of being called weak in defense that they are not ready to question the RW doctrines in foreign policy. They are just ready to dress them with a little bit of diplomacy to make them more palatable.
